First-person shooter Duke Nukem Forever was released in 2011 for Windows, the PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360. It was created by 3D Realms and distributed by 2K Games. It is the follow-up to Duke Nukem 3D and the fourth primary entry in the Duke Nukem series (1996). As Duke Nukem emerges from retirement to fight an alien invasion, players take control of him. Like its predecessor, Duke Nukem Forever contains obscene themes, humour, and pop culture references.
Storyline
Duke Nukem amassed famous wealth twelve years after he rescued Earth from an extraterrestrial invasion. He plays a Duke Nukem 3D-themed video game before showing up for an interview on a talk show set. Duke sees a television report reporting that aliens had invaded on his way to the performance. However, in contrast to earlier encounters, the aliens initially seem friendly and don't seem to threaten Earth's humans.
Duke retreats to his house, the "Duke Cave," when his talk show engagement is postponed so that television stations may cover the alien invasion. General Graves of the Earth Defense Force and the president summon him from there (EDF).
Duke is compelled to defy the president's orders and battle his way through the alien hordes when hostile aliens attack him. However, Duke sees the aliens kidnapping women, including his two pop star girlfriends, as he fights through his casino. Graves informs Duke that the aliens have a grudge against Duke and that the women are being held captive inside Duke Dome.
Gameplay
The first-person shooter, Duke Nukem Forever, blends combat, exploration, and puzzle solving.
- Action hero in the style of the 1980s, Duke Nukem, fights extraterrestrial invaders in three primary locations: Las Vegas, a highway, and Hoover Dam.
- Boss battles, fetch missions, and driving sequences are all featured in some sections. In one episode, Duke is reduced to a toy car size. There are also minigames like pinball, air hockey, and whack-a-mole.
- As in the Halo series, Forever is slower than previous Duke Nukem games. Players can only carry two weapons at once, and Duke's health regenerates automatically.
- A shotgun, trip mines, a shrink ray (which causes foes to shrink so Duke may stamp on them), and a freeze ray are among the available weaponry (which freezes enemies so Duke can shatter them). Like Duke Nukem 3D, Forever features sexual themes, including strip clubs and the ability to urinate, pop culture allusions, and toilet humour.
- Players participate in games like deathmatch, capture the flag, and king of the hill in multiplayer mode.
