Best New Multiplayer Horror Games Released in 2026
These are the freshest multiplayer horror games of the year. Every game below launched or hit full release in 2026, so if your group has already burned out on the usual suspects, start here.

1. REANIMAL
Released: February 13, 2026 | Players: 1 to 2 (couch and online) | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 | Price: $39.99
The original creators of Little Nightmares 1 and 2 left the series behind and built something even darker at Tarsier Studios. You and a friend play a brother and sister crossing a hellish island, partly by boat and partly on foot, to rescue friends who went missing. The two of you share one directed camera, and it is framed on purpose to make tight rooms feel suffocating and open water feel dangerously exposed.
How it scares you: REANIMAL rarely relies on cheap jump scares. The twisted creatures are built from fragments of the kids’ own troubled past, and the game lets them loom in the background long before they notice you. Chases are rare, which makes each one hit harder, because both players panic at the exact same moment. It is also rated Mature, so expect far more disturbing imagery than anything in Little Nightmares.
The co op setup is the most generous on this list. You get full crossplay across PC, PS5, Xbox and Switch 2, couch co op on one screen, and a Friend’s Pass so only one of you needs to own the full game. A Season Pass is also rolling out three story chapters, with the last one due in early 2027. Some early buyers reported online disconnects, so couch co op is the safest option if you have a second controller.
Play it if: you want a short, haunting horror story with one friend rather than an endless party game.

2. Shift at Midnight
Released: July 22, 2026 | Players: 1 to 3 online (bigger optional lobbies came in a later patch) | Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass | Price: $9.99
Made by Australian solo developer Bun Muen, Shift at Midnight puts you behind the counter of a lonely gas station where some customers are not human. You stock shelves, take deliveries, keep the store clean and hit a nightly sales quota. At the same time, you have to question every customer, check their ID, cross check their details on the computer and watch how they behave.
How it scares you: The fear here is doubt. Any customer could be a doppelganger, and if you let one walk out the door, it comes back later that same shift as a monster. Then the job flips into pure survival as you board up the doors, lay traps and hide. Shifts are randomly generated, so you cannot memorize the answers, and with proximity chat your group ends up arguing in whispers over whether that last guy’s ID looked wrong.
There are two catches. It is not on PS5, and crossplay only links Xbox console players with PC Game Pass players, while Steam players match with other Steam players. A free multiplayer demo is available on Steam if you want to test it first.
Play it if: you love identity checking horror and want a group game that feels completely different from ghost hunting.

3. Directive 8020
Released: May 12, 2026 (online multiplayer added October 19, 2026) | Players: 1 to 5 | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Price: From $39.99
Supermassive Games takes its Dark Pictures series into space. The crew of the colony ship Cassiopeia is heading for a new home when an alien that can copy and take over human bodies gets on board. Lashana Lynch leads the cast as astronaut Brianna Young, and every dialogue choice and quick reaction decides who survives.
How it scares you: Directive 8020 runs on paranoia. You might end up staring at two identical versions of the same engineer and have to decide which one is real. A wrong call can kill someone for good, especially in Survivor Mode, which removes the rewind option and makes every death permanent. In Movie Night mode, each friend controls one crew member, so the person who gets a character killed has to live with the whole room blaming them.
Movie Night launched as couch co op only, but the October 19 update finally brought it online for up to five players. Each player needs their own copy for online play. Honest take: reviews were mixed, and it is lighter on raw scares than Until Dawn, but it is still one of the best group horror options for a sofa full of friends.
Play it if: your group loves horror movie nights and yelling at each other’s decisions.

4. Invokyr
Released: October 8, 2026 (Early Access) | Players: 1 to 6 online | Platforms: PC | Price: $12.99
Invokyr traps you and your friends inside an abandoned house with a cursed 1970s board game. A sinister Gamemaster, voiced by Amelia Tyler of Baldur’s Gate 3 fame, runs the table. To escape, you roll the dice and push forward, but every roll can summon traps, curses or creatures. The dice themselves are hidden around the house and each one only works once, so somebody always has to leave the board and search the dark rooms.
How it scares you: You trigger the horror yourself, and that creates a special kind of dread every time it is your turn to roll. The house is easy to get lost in, so a quick dice hunt can turn into a lonely walk through rooms you do not recognize. You can also choose to abandon a teammate when things go wrong, which keeps everyone a little suspicious of each other.
The Early Access build includes a classic board plus jungle, icy mountain and desert themes, over 15 monsters and more than 20 events. Its demo passed 700,000 downloads before launch, and the developers have warned that the price may go up as more content arrives.
Play it if: you have ever wished Jumanji was a six player horror game.

5. Halloween: The Game
Released: September 8, 2026 | Players: 1v4 online, plus a solo campaign | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Price: $39.99
IllFonic, the studio behind Friday the 13th: The Game, brings John Carpenter’s slasher to Haddonfield on Halloween night, 1978. One player becomes Michael Myers, while four heroes try to warn their neighbors, grab household items and weapons, and convince civilians to call the police or follow them to an escape route. There is also a six chapter solo campaign told from Michael’s side, narrated by Dr. Loomis.
How it scares you: Michael cannot be killed, only slowed down, so as a hero you are always running from something you cannot beat. The town is full of reactive residents, which means a terrified scream from the house next door can tell you exactly where he is. Playing as Michael is the flip side of the fear, as you get to stalk quietly through backyards like the movie.
Now the honest part. The launch was rough, with crashes, odd bugs and poor PC optimization. IllFonic has since pushed patch 1.1.0 on October 6 and a crash fixing hotfix on October 16, and it has promised a bigger Halloween content drop later this month. It sits on PC, PS5 and Xbox with crossplay, but it is not sold in Australia after being refused classification there.
Play it if: you are a Halloween movie fan who can forgive some jank for the atmosphere.

6. No More Room in Hell 2
Released: August 11, 2026 (full release) | Players: Up to 8 | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Price: $29.99
The sequel to the legendary zombie mod finally left Early Access this year and came to consoles for the first time. You play an emergency Responder dropped into zombie infested locations along the US Northeast coast, and you start completely alone in the dark until you find the rest of your squad.
How it scares you: This is zombie horror that does not let you feel like a hero. Ammo is scarce, a single bite starts an infection timer, and online runs carry permadeath. Helicopter extraction decides whether you keep your progress, so the last few minutes of every mission are pure tension. With eight players and proximity chat, someone is always shouting from a room you cannot find.
The 1.0 release added a Solo mode for practicing without permadeath, a Survival mode where you defend speaker towers so civilians can evacuate, thousands of fixes and full crossplay.
Play it if: Left 4 Dead feels too heroic and you want zombies that actually make you nervous.

7. YAPYAP
Released: February 3, 2026 | Players: 1 to 6 online | Platforms: PC | Price: $9.99
In YAPYAP, you and up to five friends play as minions summoned by a wizard to wreck a rival’s tower. The twist is that spells are cast with your actual voice, so you have to shout the right word into your mic to make magic happen. Each round lasts three nights, and you need to hit a destruction quota while buying better wands with the gold you find.
How it scares you: The tower is guarded by magical beasts and monsters, and sneaking around is the safest way to avoid them. The problem is that every spell needs you to speak out loud, so the calm stealth moments regularly explode into six people yelling at the same time. It leans more toward comedy than terror.
It sold half a million copies in about a week, but players often say it gets repetitive after a few sessions and could use more maps and enemies.
Play it if: your group wants chaos and laughs more than genuine fear.
Fan Favorite Multiplayer Horror Games Still Worth Playing in 2026
New releases are exciting, but these good multiplayer horror games never left the conversation. Most of them got major updates this year, so they play better now than they did at launch.

8. Phasmophobia
Released: 2020 (still in Early Access) | Players: 1 to 4 | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Price: $19.99
Phasmophobia is still the gold standard for ghost hunting. Your team walks into a haunted location with EMF readers, spirit boxes, thermometers and night vision cameras, then works out which of the 20+ ghost types is haunting the place before it gets violent. Someone can always stay in the truck watching cameras and motion sensors if they are too scared to go inside.
How it scares you: It is a slow burn. A door creaks open, the lights die, a thermometer drops below freezing, and then the hunt begins and everyone scatters to hide. The game also uses real voice recognition, so the ghost can hear you through Ouija boards and spirit box sessions, and talking too much in the wrong room can make things much worse.
Kinetic Games has kept 2026 busy with a 13 Willow Street rework and quality of life updates, plus the Crimson Eye event and a move to the Unity 6 engine scheduled for October, with a player character makeover planned for November. The full 1.0 release and the Switch 2 version have both slipped to the second half of 2027.
Play it if: you want the definitive ghost hunting experience and enjoy learning how each ghost behaves.

9. Lethal Company
Released: 2023 (still in Early Access) | Players: 1 to 4 | Platforms: PC | Price: $9.99
You are contract workers for a ruthless corporation, landing on abandoned moons to collect scrap and meet a profit quota. One player can stay on the ship using the radar and terminal to open locked doors, while the rest head into dark facilities full of traps and creatures.
How it scares you: Proximity chat is the secret weapon. When a friend wanders off, their voice fades, and if something gets them, you might hear the scream cut off from two rooms away. Things get far more dangerous at night, and the quota keeps tempting you to grab one more item when you should already be running back to the ship.
Solo developer Zeekerss returned this spring with the v80 update, which reworked the forest moons, added three new creatures and brought back the Kidnapper Fox. The game still sits at 97% positive reviews on Steam.
Play it if: you want the game that kicked off the current wave of cheap, chaotic multiplayer horror games.

10. R.E.P.O.
Released: 2025 (still in Early Access) | Players: 1 to 6 | Platforms: PC | Price: $9.99
In R.E.P.O., you play robots working for a mysterious computer intelligence, sent into haunted ruins to retrieve valuables. Everything runs on physics, from tiny vases to grand pianos, and items lose value every time you bump them into a wall. Carrying anything big needs real teamwork.
How it scares you: The game forces you to be slow, careful and quiet at the worst possible times. Halfway through gently steering a fragile piano down a hallway, something shows up, and suddenly six players are deciding whether to save the loot or save themselves. Monsters follow the same physics rules as you, which leads to moments that are equal parts terrifying and hilarious.
The May 2026 Cosmetic Update added more than 500 cosmetics hidden in crates across levels, a redesigned shop and a racing mode, pushing the player count back above 100,000. It is still PC only, and no console date has been announced.
Play it if: you want the most laughs per scream of any game here.

11. Dead by Daylight
Released: 2016 | Players: 4 Survivors vs 1 Killer (plus a 2v8 mode) | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch | Price: $19.99 on Steam
The king of asymmetrical horror multiplayer games turned 10 this year and is still growing. Four Survivors repair generators to power the exit gates, while one Killer player hunts them down with unique powers. The roster now mixes original killers with horror icons from movies and other games.
How it scares you: The Killer is a real person who learns your habits. You hear the heartbeat get louder as they close in, you try to stay hidden while repairing a generator, and every chase becomes a mind game around pallets and windows. Nothing an AI monster does feels as personal as a human player choosing to come back for you.
2026 has been packed. Jason Voorhees arrived in June for the 10th anniversary, the community voted Chorus of Sin chapter followed in August, the 2v8 mode returned in September, and Art the Clown from Terrifier hits the test servers on October 27 before launching on November 12. If you are jumping in, grab the latest Dead by Daylight codes for free Bloodpoints and cosmetics.
Play it if: you want competitive horror with years of depth and full crossplay.

12. The Outlast Trials
Released: March 5, 2024 | Players: 1 to 4 | Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One | Price: $39.99
Set during the Cold War, The Outlast Trials turns you into a test subject for the Murkoff Corporation’s brainwashing experiments. There are no guns. You survive by sneaking, hiding and running, with tools that can stun or blind enemies, heal your team or briefly let you see through walls.
How it scares you: This is the most disturbing of all the multiplayer horror games on this list. The enemies are grotesque, the sound design is excellent, and the trials ask you to do genuinely unpleasant things just to reach the exit. The Escalation mode adds even more pressure, since from Trial 21 onward, the damage you take carries over and revives are gone.
Red Barrels keeps the content flowing. Season 7, Project Boneyard, landed in July with a new Prison Farm environment, the Locksock the Warden trial and a new enemy called The Biter, followed by the Chemical Leak event in September. Crossplay works across every platform, though progress does not carry between them.
Play it if: you want intense, mature horror and your group is fine with heavy gore.

13. Content Warning
Released: 2024 on PC, April 1, 2026 on consoles | Players: 1 to 4 | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, Switch 2 | Price: Under $10
Your team dives into a place called the Old World with a camera, films the scariest things you can find, then uploads the footage to SpookTube for views. You need to hit 480 views by the end of the first three days to keep the run alive.
How it scares you: To get good footage, someone has to point the camera directly at the monster instead of running away. The person filming sees the world through a small lens, which makes them easy prey, and the physics animated creatures move in ways that feel wrong. It is hilarious right up until the camera operator gets dragged off mid shot.
This year it finally reached consoles with crossplay through friend codes, and the PC version is now Steam Deck verified.
Play it if: your group wants a quick, funny horror night with plenty of clip worthy moments.

14. Escape the Backrooms
Released: Full PC release in October 2025, PS5 and Xbox on May 28, 2026, Switch 2 on July 7, 2026 | Players: 1 to 4 | Price: $12.99
Based on the famous Backrooms internet legend, this game drops your group into endless yellow rooms, flickering lights and strange levels, with 30+ locations to escape through. Every player has to reach the exit alive for the team to move on.
How it scares you: It is horror built on emptiness. The buzzing lights and repeating hallways mess with your sense of direction, teammates can randomly fall out of the map into other areas, and the entities can hear you. Getting separated in a place that looks the same in every direction is genuinely unsettling.
The 2026 console launch added full crossplay across PC, PS5, Xbox and Switch 2 through lobby codes, and the game is also part of Game Pass.
Play it if: you prefer creeping atmosphere over gore.

15. Little Nightmares III
Released: October 2025 | Players: 1 to 2 online | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch | Price: $39.99
Supermassive Games took over the series and added online co op for the first time. You guide two children, Low and Alone, through the Spiral, a world of warped adults and twisted places, solving puzzles and escaping things far bigger than you. Solo players get an AI partner instead.
How it scares you: The fear comes from scale. You are tiny, the grown ups are huge and grotesque, and hiding under a table while something sniffs around above you is classic Little Nightmares dread.
A Friend’s Pass lets a friend join without owning the game, but co op is online only, and crossplay only works within the same console family.
Play it if: you finished REANIMAL and want another creepy adventure for two.

16. GTFO
Released: 2021 | Players: 1 to 4 (bots fill empty slots) | Platforms: PC | Price: $39.99
GTFO sends a team of prisoners into an underground facility called the Complex on missions issued by a mysterious Warden. The Final Edition bundles every Rundown, including the closing Duality chapter, for more than 80 brutal expeditions.
How it scares you: Most creatures start asleep, and light, noise or vibration can wake them. If one wakes up, they all know you are there. That means long stretches of silent, careful planning, scarce ammo and whispered callouts, followed by total chaos when someone makes one mistake.
Play it if: your squad wants the hardest, most tactical horror shooter around.

17. DEVOUR
Released: 2021 | Players: 1 to 4 | Platforms: PC | Price: $9.99
In DEVOUR, you play cult members trying to stop possessed cultists before they drag everyone to hell. Each map features a new form of the goat demon Azazel, and your team races to find ritual items, some of which are alive and do not want to be caught. Your only defense is a UV flashlight.
How it scares you: The pressure keeps building. The possessed cultist gets faster and angrier as the match goes on and spawns more fiends to hunt you. Doors, items and spawns are randomized, so you can never fully plan a run, and sessions can last up to an hour of constant tension.
Play it if: you want a cheap, replayable horror night that is easy to learn.

Best Free Multiplayer Horror Games
You do not always need to spend money to scare your friends. These are the best free multiplayer horror games and free ways to play right now.
- SCP: Secret Laboratory: A completely free to play game on Steam set during a containment breach at an underground facility. You might spawn as a prisoner trying to escape, a scientist, a soldier or one of the escaped SCPs. Some creatures kill you the moment you look at their face, while another can copy other players’ voices to lure them in, which is terrifying with open voice chat. The developers revealed a new playable creature, SCP 953, in February 2026, and a major overhaul called Megapatch III is in the works.
- Roblox horror games: Every game in the next section is free to play, and many are genuinely scary.
- Friend’s Pass games: REANIMAL and Little Nightmares III both let a friend join your game for free, so only one person needs to buy a copy.
- Free demos: Shift at Midnight has a free multiplayer demo on Steam, and many co op horror games release demos during Steam Next Fest.
- Free weekends and giveaways: Dead by Daylight was free to play on Steam for a week during its 10th anniversary in June 2026, and the Epic Games Store regularly gives away horror titles. Keep an eye on our Epic Games free games list so you never miss one.
Best Roblox Horror Games 2026: Multiplayer Scares That Cost Nothing
The best thing about Roblox horror games? Multiplayer comes built in, and every one of them is free to start. These are the most active and genuinely scary picks in 2026.

DOORS
DOORS sends you through a hotel where every door can hide a puzzle, a trap or a deadly entity like Rush or Screech. The scare comes from anticipation, because flickering lights or a strange sound are often your only warning. The Archives Update in August 2026 reworked the old Rooms area and added nine new entities, more than ten items and two new sub floors.

Pressure
Pressure takes you deep underwater into a research facility where something is always hunting you through the dark corridors. Its March 2026 update added Modifiers, a Charm Machine and a crossover with the horror game Grace. Grab the latest Pressure codes before your next dive.

Forsaken
Forsaken is the closest thing Roblox has to Dead by Daylight, with one killer hunting the rest of the server. The killers are twisted versions of classic Roblox myths like c00lkidd, John Doe, 1x1x1x1 and Guest 666, which makes the horror feel strangely personal for longtime Roblox players. Our Forsaken character list breaks down every Killer and Survivor.

99 Nights in the Forest
This breakout hit asks you and your friends to survive night after night in a forest full of monsters, cultists and wild animals while searching for four missing kids. The slow build of dread and the scramble to keep your campfire alive make it one of the best Roblox horror experiences for groups. Check out our guide to every 99 Nights in the Forest entity and monster and the latest 99 Nights in the Forest codes.

Dandy’s World
In Dandy’s World, your team of cartoon Toons climbs an abandoned museum floor by floor, filling Ichor machines while avoiding the Twisteds, corrupted versions of the characters. Staying too long on one floor is always tempting and always risky. Weekly events keep it fresh, and our Dandy’s World codes help you unlock new Toons faster.

The Mimic
The Mimic is a chapter based horror game inspired by Japanese folklore, packed with dark corridors, eerie silence and monsters that feel far scarier than you would expect on Roblox. Playing in a group helps, but it also means someone is always lagging behind at the worst moment.

Piggy: Intercity
After two delays, MiniToon finally launched Piggy: Intercity on June 13, 2026. It is the next big step for one of Roblox’s oldest horror series, with survivors working together to escape while being chased through tense maps.

Demonology
Demonology is a ghost hunting game that plays a lot like Phasmophobia, with solo and co op investigations of haunted locations. It is the perfect free starting point if your friends are not ready to buy a paid ghost hunting game yet. Use our Demonology codes for free rewards.
If you plan to unlock skins, revives or game passes in any of these, Roblox gift cards and Robux are the easiest way to top up.

Tips for a Better Horror Night With Friends
A few small habits make multiplayer horror games far scarier and far less frustrating.
- Use headphones – Positional audio and proximity chat are half the fear in games like Lethal Company and Phasmophobia.
- Check who needs to buy the game – Friend’s Pass games like REANIMAL save money, while Directive 8020 needs a copy for every online player.
- Confirm crossplay first – Little Nightmares III and Shift at Midnight have limited crossplay, so check before your group buys on different platforms.
- Fix your connection – Lag during a chase is a guaranteed death. If your ping keeps spiking, read our breakdown of whether ExitLag really works or pick one of the best VPNs for gamers.
