Nicole Wilson read a letter from her deceased mother, Claire in December 1993. Leonard McGrath, Nicole's father, was the proprietor of the Helena National Forest-adjacent Timberline Hotel in Lewis and Clark County, Montana. Leonard slept with Nicole's 16-year-old classmate Rachel Foster. As soon as their relationship was revealed, Rachel, who was nine weeks pregnant, appeared to commit suicide, and Claire fled town with Nicole. Claire gives Nicole instructions in the letter to look over the hotel and sell it.
When Nicole arrives at the Timberline, she receives a call from Irving Crawford of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, who promises to help her while she is there.
Irving plays Nicole, a recording made by ghost hunters after Rachel's passing two days later. When she goes into the room where the recording was made, she discovers that it is locked. Nicole finds a microphone inside the locked container that she may use to detect trembling noises. In the video, one of the hunters uses the microphone to pick up a woman's voice, and they all run after spotting a peculiar light, the door closing behind them.
Nicole awakens on Christmas Eve within a chapel that is underground connected to the Timberline. She recalls the rhyme Leonard had taught her to locate a hidden storehouse inside the passage as she returns to the chapel.
