A third-person shooter computer Game called Max Payne 2 was created by Remedy Entertainment and released by Rockstar Games in 2003. The second Game within the Max Payne series it's the follow-up to Max Payne from 2001.
Within the sequel, which takes place two years after the events of the previous Game, Max Payne is another time employed by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) as a detective while also dealing with nightmares related to his traumatic past. Max must cooperate with contract killer Mona Sax to unravel a plot involving death and betrayal after they are unintentionally reconnected. This may put him to the test as to where his actual loyalties lie.
Max Payne returns to the NYPD together with his life in tatters. He encounters enchantress murder suspect Mona Sax while conducting a routine murder inquiry. The answers to his nagging questions are in her hands. However, nothing is simple on New York City's tragically night. Max cannot seek the solutions he needs because of a horde of criminal thugs. He proceeds to descend even further into his little hell.

Gameplay
- Third-person shooter Max Payne 2 has linear levels divided into three different chapters.
- The player assumes the position of recurring protagonist Max Payne for much of the Game. During several phases of chapters 2 and 3, the player takes the role of the supporting character Mona Sax. The player's starting weapon is a 9mm pistol.
- Gain access to handguns, shotguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and hand-throwing weapons.
- To advance the Game, Max's internal monologue, in which Max repeats his subsequent actions, informs the player of their next objective.
Plot
Due to his ties to the Inner Circle Secret Society, Max Payne (James McCaffrey) is cleared of all charges two years after the original Game events and reinstated to his former position as an NYPD detective. Max recalls recent events and tells the story from his perspective.
In the first flashback, Max is being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound. Several assassins attack Max during a raid on a hospital, but he manages to escape and makes his way to the morgue, where he discovers the body of a woman he recently murdered. The Game then advances to several more previous nights.
Jonathan Davis' character Vladimir "Vlad" Lem, a Russian mobster, is Max's ally. Max is investigating a shooting at a warehouse when he runs into a bunch of hitmen known as "the Cleaners" who have robbed the warehouse of its firearms. Max is additionally shocked to see contract murderer Mona Sax (Wendy Hoopes), who he believed had passed away two years prior.
