Overview
FAR: The driving adventure game Lone Sails. You cross a dried-up ocean in a novel vehicle while tracing the footsteps of a once-vibrant civilization. You must continue to navigate your ship through several obstacles and dangerous storms. Where will you end up after this journey? You're the last of your kind, right?
The Swiss developer Okomotive created the exploration-adventure videogame Far: Lone Sails (spelled FAR: Lone Sails). The game was made available on 17 May 2018 for Microsoft Windows and macOS, in April 2019 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and on 18 August 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. Far: Changing Tides, the sequel, was published in March 2022.
Major Highlights
- Master your vessel: Keep it in good condition and invest in upgrades to help you navigate the many risks that nature presents.
- Explore a distinct world: Explore a barren, dried-up seabed, trace your people's footprints, and discover artefacts and structures that reveal the tale of a civilisation on the run.
- Take an atmospheric journey: Pay attention to the wind that pushes your sails toward the horizon and let the cloud-filled sky pass by.
- In a post-apocalyptic world without zombies, it's just you and your machine against the vast nothing.
Gameplay
In FAR, the player takes control of a big vehicle's driver as they explore a post-apocalyptic landscape. The game's vehicle has seen numerous modifications. The interior of the vehicle is viewed as a cross-section while the game is being played from a side-scrolling vantage point. The player must manoeuvre within the vehicle to operate stations and push buttons to carry out various tasks that keep it running, such as starting the engine or loading the boiler with fuel sources acquired during the course of the player's voyage.
The player must put out fires, fix broken systems, and maintain the vehicle's various parts as they can sustain damage. In order to cross obstacles and gather upgrades for the vehicle, they must also solve riddles around the environment. The player character can die from environmental hazards but there are no enemies in the game; if this happens, the game will restart at the previous checkpoint.
Although the game begins with a burial scene, the developers purposefully left out most of the background information in order to pique players' curiosity and encourage exploration. A technologically advanced civilization's remains can be seen in the game's sceneries, along with a planet where the oceans have dried up, leaving huge ships scuttled on dry beds and periods of incredibly dangerous weather.
