Gameplay 

In the main Game, the player takes control of Cadence, the famous treasure hunter's lost daughter. While looking for him, she stumbles into a crypt that the NecroDancer is in charge of, where he kidnaps Cadence's heart and forces her to take on his accomplices to recover it. To survive and destroy the NecroDancer, she is compelled to battle through the crypt's dungeon while moving in time with the music and her heart.

Cadence discovers "Dead Ringer," one of the NecroDancer's servants, close to the crypt's centre. He is released from the NecroDancer's grip when she overcomes him, revealing that it was her missing father, and she uses this information to help her destroy the NecroDancer. They seize the NecroDancer's enchanted golden Lute, murder him with its power, and then use its force to bring Melody, Cadence's deceased mother, back to life. They soon learn that the Lute is cursed, and while Melody must play it to survive, doing so will slowly sap her humanity, much as it did to the NecroDancer. Melody enters the crypt searching for information and a solution to the Lute's curse.

Melody uses the Golden Lute to bring the NecroDancer back to life to search for answers as she reaches the end of the crypt, but he strikes, and Melody kills him. When the NecroDancer tries to escape, Aria (Melody's mother), lying in a coffin with a knife in her chest and brought back to life by the Lute, throws the NecroDancer into a fissure. Aria says that although the NecroDancer deceived her and left her for dead, she is aware of how to overcome the Lute's curse. She starts to ascend out of the crypt, determined to complete what she started, in Quest of a shrine that will finally destroy the Lute.

When Aria arrives at the shrine, the Lute itself attacks her. The Lute transforms into a gigantic monster to prevent itself from being destroyed. Following Melody's victory over the Lute's monster form, Aria gives her life to destroy the cursed instrument, bringing Melody back to life and enabling her to rejoin her family, who subsequently bury Aria with her.
