How Many Characters Are in Free Fire?

There are 67 characters in Free Fire as of the OB55 update. Two of them, Primis and Nulla, are the free starters that every new account gets, and they have no special skill. The other 65 each bring something to your build, although A-Patroa is a special case because she gives you an extra skill slot instead of an ability of her own.

The newest character is Ray, who arrived with the OB53 update in April 2026. The OB54 anniversary patch and the OB55 Naruto patch did not add anyone new, but OB55 completely rebuilt Kenta’s skill, which shook up the rankings.

Active vs Passive Skills in Free Fire

Every Free Fire character skill falls into one of two groups, and knowing the difference makes building a loadout much easier.

  • Active skills need you to press a button and then go on cooldown. Alok, Chrono and Ray are good examples.
  • Passive skills work on their own in the background. Kelly, Hayato and Andrew are classic passive picks.
  • Your loadout holds 1 active skill and up to 3 passive skills, taken from any characters you own. The character you see on screen does not limit your skills, so you can wear your favorite look and still run the strongest combo.

You will also see EP mentioned a lot below. EP is a backup energy bar that slowly turns into HP, so skills that give or convert EP are really just healing in disguise.

Newest Free Fire Characters (2024 to 2026)

These are the most recent additions to the Free Fire character list. Most of them are built around active skills that change how fights play out, which is why several of them sit near the top of community rankings.

Ray

  • Ability: Bond of Eclipse (Active)
  • Best for: Rushers who love chaining knockdowns

Ray fires a wave of sunpower in front of him and tags the first enemy it touches, linking the two of you for 10 seconds. Once that tagged enemy drops to very low HP, they are knocked down instantly, so last second escapes stop working. Knocking down the tagged target also resets his skill and heals him. The catch is that the enemy can see the link too, so they know you are coming. Garena itself recommends pairing him with Jota, Dasha and Shani.

Morse

  • Ability: Stealth Bytes (Active)
  • Best for: Flankers and sneaky rotations

Morse slips into stealth mode, which makes him very hard to spot from a distance and hides him from scans while giving him a speed boost. He cannot shoot while stealthed, but the skill is perfect for sneaking around a fight or escaping a bad spot. He became so popular that OB55 trimmed his stealth time and made him easier to catch at close range.

Nero

  • Ability: Cryo Mind (Active)
  • Best for: Breaking campers who hide behind Gloo Walls

Nero throws a plushie that flies toward the nearest enemy and bursts into a dreamy zone. Nobody inside that zone can place Gloo Walls, and enemies slowly lose HP while they stay in it. He dominated after his OB51 debut, so Garena nerfed him several times. His plushie now breaks with a single hit, but whoever destroys it still gets marked for a few seconds.

Rin

  • Ability: Gale of Kunai (Passive)
  • Best for: Mid range fighters who face a lot of Gloo Walls

Rin is Hayato’s younger sister, and her skill runs completely on its own. Every 8 seconds she summons a kunai, holding up to 3 at once. Whenever you hit an enemy or a Gloo Wall, the kunai fly at that same target for bonus damage, and they hit harder the farther away the target is. They are especially good at chewing through Gloo Walls.

Oscar

  • Ability: Valiant Dash (Active)
  • Best for: Breaking into fights fast

Oscar dashes forward, blows up the first 3 Gloo Walls in his path and knocks back any enemy he slams into. It is one of the best ways to crack open a team hiding behind walls. OB54 raised his cooldown from 45 to 60 seconds, so save the dash for the push that matters instead of using it to run around the map.

Koda

  • Ability: Aurora Vision (Active)
  • Best for: Scouting and calling out enemy positions

For 8 seconds, Koda moves faster and scans for enemies hiding behind cover within 50 meters, refreshing every second. Players who are crouching or lying down stay hidden, so it will not catch everyone. Using it while parachuting also highlights enemies in your view, which helps you pick a safer landing spot.

Lila

  • Ability: Gloo Strike (Passive)
  • Best for: Assault rifle and marksman rifle users

Every enemy or vehicle Lila hits with a rifle gets slowed down for a few seconds. If you knock down an enemy while they are slowed, they freeze in place briefly and you receive two extra Gloo Walls. That makes her a sneaky good passive for players who like holding angles with an AR and always want spare walls for the final circles.

Kassie

  • Ability: Electro Therapy (Active)
  • Best for: Squads that want a dedicated healer

Kassie forms a healing bond with a teammate so both of you slowly regain HP. Use the skill again and she fires off a big instant heal on that teammate, and it even triggers on its own when they get dangerously low. She arrived for the 7th anniversary and has stayed one of the strongest support picks ever since, especially in full four player squads.

Kairos

  • Ability: Defense Breaker (Passive)
  • Best for: Melting enemy armor and shields

Kairos slowly builds EP while in Defense Mode. Once his EP bar is full, he flips into Breaker Mode and his shots deal bonus damage to enemy armor and shields until that EP runs out. He shines against squads that rely on shields and good vests, although recent patches cut his bonus and made Breaker Mode drain EP faster.

Ryden

  • Ability: Spider Trap (Active)
  • Best for: Ambushes and holding buildings

Ryden sends out an explosive spider that grabs the first enemy who comes within 5 meters. The trapped player is slowed heavily and keeps losing HP for a few seconds. He can keep two spiders ready at once, which makes him great for guarding doors and stairs while your team pushes somewhere else.

Free Fire Characters Released From 2021 to 2023

This stretch of the Free Fire character list gave the game some of its most iconic skills, from Skyler’s wall breaking wave to Dimitri’s healing zone. A few of these characters were reworked recently, so even veterans should take a second look.

Ignis

  • Ability: Flame Mirage (Active)
  • Best for: Pushing through Gloo Walls

Ignis sends a wide wall of fire rolling forward. Enemies who touch it take burn damage, and it melts any Gloo Walls in its path. He can store two uses of the skill, and since OB51 your own team’s flames show up in blue, so you can tell your fire apart from the enemy’s at a glance.

Suzy

  • Ability: Money Mark (Passive)
  • Best for: Battle Royale players who love spending FF Coins

Suzy places a bounty on enemies she marks. When a teammate eliminates a marked enemy, they pocket bonus FF Coins, and Suzy earns extra coins for her own eliminations too. Those coins buy gear from Vending Machines in Battle Royale, so she quietly helps your squad get better loot as the match goes on.

Orion

  • Ability: Crimson Crush (Active)
  • Best for: Close range brawlers

Orion uses Crimson Energy, a bigger energy bar that replaces normal EP. Spending it makes him immune to damage for a short time while he drains HP from enemies standing close to him. He cannot shoot while the skill is active, so think of it as a panic button that lets you survive a burst of damage before you fire back.

Sonia

  • Ability: Nano Lifeshield (Passive)
  • Best for: Squads that already run healing skills

When Sonia takes a hit that would knock her down, she gets a split second of invulnerability followed by a tiny shield. Since OB50 that shield is only 1 HP, so it buys you a moment rather than saving you outright. It still combos well with Dimitri’s healing zone, but on her own she is one of the weaker picks right now.

Santino

  • Ability: Shape Splitter (Active)
  • Best for: Mind games and quick repositioning

Santino sends out a moving mannequin, and while it is within range you can use the skill again to swap places with it instantly. That opens up great tricks like faking a push or escaping through a doorway. If an enemy destroys the mannequin, they get marked, so even a failed decoy hands your team useful information.

Tatsuya

  • Ability: Rebel Rush (Active)
  • Best for: Aggressive solo and squad rushers

Tatsuya bursts forward in a quick dash, which is perfect for closing distance or diving into cover. The skill has a long 90 second cooldown, but it resets if you knock down an enemy within 10 seconds of using it. Good players can chain dashes through an entire fight, which is why he is a favorite in ranked.

Luna

  • Ability: Fight or Flight (Passive)
  • Best for: SMG and shotgun rushers

Luna fires slightly faster at all times, and every time she lands a hit, part of that fire rate turns into extra movement speed. It makes her slippery in close range duels. Garena felt she was strong in too many situations, so OB55 cut her fire rate bonus from 8 to 5 percent, but she remains a good aggressive passive.

J.Biebs

  • Ability: Silent Sentinel (Passive)
  • Best for: Collectors and EP heavy squads

J.Biebs is the Justin Bieber collab character. His skill lets you and your teammates spend EP to block incoming damage, and any EP drained from teammates flows back to him. He was handed out through a limited login event during the 5th anniversary, so most players never got him and he rarely shows up in matches today.

Iris

  • Ability: Wall Brawl (Active)
  • Best for: Players who hate Gloo Wall standoffs

After activating her skill, Iris can shoot a Gloo Wall to mark the enemies standing near it and keep firing through the wall at reduced damage. It flips the classic Gloo Wall standoff in your favor. She originally came through a top up event, so keep an eye on the event tab if you want her.

Homer

  • Ability: Senses Shockwave (Active)
  • Best for: Starting fights and slowing down runners

Homer launches a drone that homes in on the nearest enemy in front of him. When it lands, it slows that enemy’s movement and fire rate and deals a bit of damage, which gives your team an easy window to push. The drone now targets standing enemies first, so it rarely wastes itself on someone who is already knocked down.

A-Patroa

  • Ability: No personal skill (unlocks an extra skill slot)
  • Best for: Players who want more combo freedom

A-Patroa is unusual because she has no ability of her own. Instead, owning her unlocks an exclusive skill slot that can hold any skill you already own, and the rest of your skill slots open up automatically. She is all about letting you build a bigger combo, and she was released through a top up event.

Kenta

  • Ability: Swordsman’s Wrath, reworked in OB55 (Active)
  • Best for: Players who want mobility and defense in one skill

Kenta got a complete makeover in the OB55 update. He now releases a fast swirling tempest that passes straight through Gloo Walls for 8 seconds and damages any enemy it touches. Tap the skill again and he teleports to the tempest, gaining a short shield that cuts incoming damage by 20 percent. This rework took him from a forgotten pick to one of the top choices in community rankings.

Nairi

  • Ability: Ice Iron (Passive)
  • Best for: Defensive squads that rely on Gloo Walls

Right after Nairi places a Gloo Wall, the wall quickly repairs itself and heals teammates standing close to it. The effect is short and was trimmed in OB50, but it still makes your walls much harder to break during an enemy push. He was first offered as a top up reward.

Otho

  • Ability: Memory Mist (Passive)
  • Best for: Squads that want to clean up the rest of a team

When Otho knocks down an enemy, that enemy’s nearby teammates get marked and briefly slowed. If Otho himself gets knocked down by someone close by, the attacker and their squad get marked instead. It is great for finishing off a squad the moment the first player drops.

Leon

  • Ability: Buzzer Beater (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who take a lot of back to back fights

Leon automatically regains HP after he survives a fight. It is simple, takes zero effort and saves you a Med Kit or two over a long match. It will not win gunfights by itself, but it fits nicely into almost any build.

Thiva

  • Ability: Vital Vibes (Passive)
  • Best for: Squad players who revive often

Thiva revives knocked teammates much faster, and every successful revive also restores some of his own HP. In a game where squads constantly fight over downed teammates, that extra speed can be the difference between a clutch save and a full wipe. He was also given away free during the 4th anniversary.

Dimitri

  • Ability: Healing Heartbeat (Active)
  • Best for: Squad support and long fights

Dimitri creates a healing zone around himself. Everyone inside recovers HP over time, and knocked down players inside the zone can get back up on their own without a teammate reviving them. Drop it behind cover after the enemy burns their skills and your squad becomes very hard to finish.

D-bee

  • Ability: Bullet Beats (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who keep moving while shooting

When D-bee fires while moving, he runs faster and his shots become more accurate. If your style is to strafe during gunfights instead of standing still, he is one of the best passives you can equip.

Xayne

  • Ability: Xtreme Encounter (Active)
  • Best for: Aggressive pushes

Xayne enters Xtreme mode and gains 70 temporary Shield Points for 15 seconds. Every knockdown refills that shield and restarts the timer, so a good push can keep her protected for a long time. Any leftover shield disappears once the mode ends.

Maro

  • Ability: Falcon Fervor (Passive)
  • Best for: Snipers and long range players

Maro deals more damage the farther away his target is, up to a 20 percent bonus, plus a little extra damage to enemies that are marked. That makes him a natural fit for sniper players and a great partner for markers like Moco. OB54 trimmed his distance bonus slightly, but he is still a top long range passive.

Skyler

  • Ability: Riptide Rhythm (Active)
  • Best for: Breaking enemy cover

Skyler is based on Vietnamese singer Son Tung MTP. His skill unleashes a sonic wave that locks onto and damages Gloo Walls in front of him, making him a classic counter to teams that hide behind walls. He also recovers HP every time he places one of his own Gloo Walls.

Shirou

  • Ability: Damage Delivered (Passive)
  • Best for: Punishing whoever shoots you first

Whenever an enemy shoots Shirou, they get marked for a few seconds, and that information is shared with his team. His first shot on a marked enemy also cuts through armor better than usual. It is a great pick for turning an ambush back on the player who started it.

Classic Free Fire Characters (2017 to 2020)

These are the characters that built the game and the oldest names on the Free Fire character list. Many of them got new skills over the years, so the versions below are the current ones, not the abilities you might remember from older guides.

Chrono

  • Ability: Time Turner (Active)
  • Best for: Instant cover and safe revives

Chrono is the Cristiano Ronaldo collab character. He creates a force field that blocks up to 1,000 damage for 10 seconds, giving your squad instant cover on open ground. Nobody inside can shoot out, so treat it as a tool for healing, reviving or repositioning. OB54 lowered his cooldown to 45 seconds, which put him back in a lot of squads.

K

  • Ability: Master of All (Active)
  • Best for: EP based healing and squad support

K raises his maximum EP and switches between two modes. Jiu jitsu mode makes nearby teammates turn EP into HP much faster, while Psychology mode refills his own EP over time. In practice, K keeps his whole squad topped up between fights, which is why he has stayed a top support pick for years.

Jai

  • Ability: Raging Reload (Passive)
  • Best for: Aggressive players who hate reloading mid fight

Jai is based on Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan. Whenever he knocks down an enemy, the gun in his hands gets its magazine refilled automatically, as long as it is an assault rifle, pistol, SMG or shotgun. That means you can go straight from one knockdown into the next fight without a risky reload.

Dasha

  • Ability: Partying On (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who chain knockdowns

After Dasha knocks down an enemy, she enters Highlight mode, which boosts her fire rate and movement speed for 10 seconds. Every extra knockdown during that window resets the timer and pushes the bonus higher. OB53 stretched the duration from 6 to 10 seconds, making her far better at turning one knock into a squad wipe.

Luqueta

  • Ability: Hat Trick (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who rack up eliminations

Every elimination permanently adds Shield Points to Luqueta’s maximum, up to a total bonus of 45. The bonus resets if you get eliminated or a new round starts. The more aggressively you play, the tankier he gets.

Wolfrahh

  • Ability: Limelight (Passive)
  • Best for: Headshot hunters

Every elimination adds a spectator to Wolfrahh’s match, and those spectators never leave. Each one slightly reduces the headshot damage he takes and increases his own headshot damage, up to a 30 percent boost. He rewards players who can build on early kills.

Clu

  • Ability: Tracing Steps (Active)
  • Best for: Solo players who want to know where enemies are

Clu reveals the location of nearby enemies, as long as they are standing up. Crouching or prone players stay hidden. It is a simple and reliable way to avoid walking straight into a squad you did not see.

Kapella

  • Ability: Remedy Rounds (Passive)
  • Best for: Dedicated squad healers

Kapella’s reworked skill lets her ammo heal teammates, and the healing gets even stronger when she uses a Heal Pistol. She is a niche but fun support pick for squads that play around a dedicated medic.

Jota

  • Ability: Sustained Raids (Passive)
  • Best for: Close range rushers

Jota restores a little HP every time he hits an enemy with a gun, and knocking down an enemy in any way restores 20 percent of his HP. Since OB53, the knockdown heal works no matter how you get the knock, which made him one of the best passives for players who love constant fighting.

Steffie

  • Ability: Graffiti’s Blessing (Active)
  • Best for: Late game zone fights

Steffie paints an area that stops grenades and other throwables from entering. Allies inside regain armor durability every second and take less damage from bullets. It is perfect for the chaotic final circles when grenades start flying in from every direction.

Alvaro

  • Ability: Split Blitz (Passive)
  • Best for: Grenade lovers

Alvaro’s explosives deal more damage and cover a bigger area. On top of that, each grenade splits into three mini grenades after it explodes, and each mini grenade deals a quarter of the original damage. If you love lobbing grenades into buildings, he is your character.

Alok

  • Ability: Drop the Beat (Active)
  • Best for: Squad healing and fast pushes

Alok is based on Brazilian DJ Alok and is still one of the most picked characters in the game. His skill creates an aura that heals you and nearby teammates over time while boosting movement speed. It works for pushing and for patching up after a fight, which is why he lands near the top of almost every community ranking.

Notora

  • Ability: Racer’s Blessing (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who rotate by vehicle

While Notora is driving, everyone in her vehicle slowly regains HP. It is handy on long rotations across big maps, but vehicles also attract attention, so she stays a niche pick.

Shani

  • Ability: Gear Recycle (Passive)
  • Best for: Pairing with active skill characters

Whenever Shani uses an active skill, she and teammates within 10 meters gain 30 Shield Points. Since OB53, those shields last 10 seconds before fading, and the effect can trigger again after a short cooldown. She pairs brilliantly with characters like Ray or Tatsuya whose skills you use often.

Joseph

  • Ability: Silver Spoon (Passive)
  • Best for: Solo players who hate being slowed or tracked

Joseph is immune to disruptive effects such as slows, marks and skill silencing, and he also gets a movement speed boost. That makes him a strong answer to characters that rely on slowing or tagging you, like Homer, Lila and Moco.

Rafael

  • Ability: Dead Silent (Passive)
  • Best for: Snipers who like staying hidden

Rafael automatically silences sniper rifles and marksman rifles when he fires them, so enemies have a harder time working out where the shots came from. Enemies he knocks down also bleed out faster, which gives their squad less time to save them.

A124

  • Ability: Thrill of Battle (Active)
  • Best for: Shutting down enemy skills

A124 throws an electromagnetic wave that stops enemies caught inside from using their skills and interrupts actions with a countdown, such as reviving a teammate. Holding the skill button shows exactly where the wave will land. Use it right before a push so the enemy team cannot answer with their own abilities.

Laura

  • Ability: Sharp Shooter (Passive)
  • Best for: Scope users

Laura becomes much more accurate whenever she is scoped in, and OB50 raised that bonus to 60 percent. If you spend most fights aiming down a scope with an AR or sniper, she is an easy and reliable pick.

Hayato

  • Ability: Art of Blades (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who fight back from low HP

The more HP Hayato loses, the better his bullets cut through armor and the less damage he takes from the front. He becomes most dangerous right when enemies think they have him beaten. He is also Rin’s older brother.

Moco

  • Ability: Enigma’s Eye (Passive)
  • Best for: Squad callouts

Any enemy Moco hits gets marked, revealing their location to her whole team on screen and on the minimap for a few seconds, and a little longer if they keep moving. Information skills were trimmed in OB53, but she is still one of the easiest ways to get your squad focusing the same target.

Wukong

  • Ability: Camouflage (Active)
  • Best for: Hiding, ambushing and escaping

Wukong turns into a bush for a short time, moving a little slower while disguised. Attacking ends the disguise, and knocking down an enemy within 10 seconds of using it resets the cooldown. OB55 cut his cooldown to 75 seconds, so you can hide and ambush more often.

Caroline

  • Ability: Agility (Passive)
  • Best for: Shotgun rushers

Caroline moves faster whenever she holds a shotgun. It is a simple skill, but in the hands of a confident shotgun player, that extra speed makes it easier to close in and land the one or two shots you need.

Antonio

  • Ability: Gangster’s Spirit (Passive)
  • Best for: Early game landings

Antonio starts each match with 20 bonus Shield Points, and that shield refills after he survives a fight. It helps most in hot landing spots when everyone is still scrambling for armor.

Miguel

  • Ability: Crazy Slayer (Passive)
  • Best for: Aggressive players on a budget

Miguel gains EP every time he eliminates an enemy, and that EP slowly turns into HP. The more you fight, the healthier you stay, which makes him a decent budget passive for aggressive players.

Paloma

  • Ability: Shatterburst (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who break Gloo Walls first

After destroying a Gloo Wall, Paloma gets better weapon accuracy for 10 seconds. Break the wall, then punish whoever was hiding behind it. Her old ammo carrying skill was replaced with this version, and it makes her far more useful in real fights.

Kla

  • Ability: Muay Thai (Passive)
  • Best for: Fist fights and fun builds

Kla deals much more damage with his fists. It is a fun pick for early game punch fights, but once everyone has a gun, his skill rarely matters.

Misha

  • Ability: Afterburner (Passive)
  • Best for: Vehicle rotations

Misha drives faster, takes less damage inside vehicles and is harder to hit while driving. She is handy on long rotations, but like any vehicle skill, her value depends on the match.

Nikita

  • Ability: Firearms Expert (Passive)
  • Best for: Stopping enemy healing

Nikita reloads 20 percent faster, and every hit she lands cuts the target’s healing in half for 6 seconds. That second part is the real gem because it makes life miserable for squads that lean on Alok, K or Dimitri. OB54 lowered her reload bonus, but the healing cut keeps her very useful.

Olivia

  • Ability: Healing Touch (Passive)
  • Best for: Squad healers

Olivia boosts her healing by 30 percent and shares 90 percent of any single target healing she does with teammates within 20 meters. OB54 buffed her range and sharing, turning an overlooked early character into a genuinely useful team healer.

Maxim

  • Ability: Gluttony (Passive)
  • Best for: Healing faster mid fight

Maxim uses Med Kits and eats mushrooms faster than anyone else. Faster healing means less time standing still, which is why community combos still slot him in. You can also pick him up through level rewards.

Kelly

  • Ability: Deadly Velocity (Passive)
  • Best for: Beginners and sprint rushers

After Kelly sprints for 4 seconds, her first shot on an enemy within the next few seconds deals bonus damage. It is easy to trigger and great for opening a fight, and she is one of the characters you can unlock through level rewards.

Ford

  • Ability: Iron Will (Passive)
  • Best for: Players who trade damage up close

Whenever Ford takes damage, he starts healing a small amount of HP every second for a few seconds. The effect has a 20 second cooldown, which resets the moment you use an active skill. It is a cheap and steady source of healing in close range fights.

Andrew

  • Ability: Wolf Pack (Passive)
  • Best for: Beginners and squad players

Andrew’s armor takes less damage, and the bonus grows by 1 percent for each teammate within 15 meters. He unlocks for free very early through level rewards and stays a dependable passive for squad players.

Primis (Adam)

  • Ability: None
  • Best for: Players who simply like the look

Primis, known as Adam in older versions of the game, is one of the two default characters every new account starts with. He has no special skill, so picking him is purely about style while your equipped skills do the work.

Nulla (Eve)

  • Ability: None
  • Best for: Players who simply like the look

Nulla, originally called Eve, is the second free starter. Like Primis, she has no ability of her own, but you can still equip skills from any character you own while playing as her.

Best Free Fire Characters in the Current Meta

There is no single best character because it depends on how you play. After OB55, community rankings have Kenta, Alok, Oscar, Kassie, Koda and Nero at the very top, with longtime favorites like Dimitri, K and Chrono close behind. Here is a quick way to pick by playstyle.

Who is the newest character in Free Fire?

Which Free Fire characters can I get for free?

Yes. Both versions use the same roster and share your account, so every character on this Free Fire character list works in Free Fire MAX too.

Which Free Fire characters are based on real people?
