The story revolves around a long-running conflict between the Assassins, who fight to protect peace and free will, and the Templars, who want to rule in peace. It is set in a fictional history of actual events. An unnamed and invisible protagonist who joins the Assassins as an initiative to assist them in finding the body of an 18th-century Templar Grand Master is featured in the framework story, which is set in the twenty-first century. The main plot, which takes place in Paris between 1789 and 1794 during the French Revolution, centres on assassin Arno Dorian's attempts to reveal the natural forces that were driving the Revolution while exacting vengeance on those responsible for the murder of his adopted father.
