We Happy Few is an action Game with stealth and survival features played in the first person. In each of the Game's three acts, players take control of one of three individuals, each of which has a unique set of powers and capabilities and a particular motivation for escaping Wellington Wells. There is Ollie Starkey, a strong melee fighter skilled at creating potent explosives; Arthur Hastings, a well-rounded character skilled at creating weapons; Sally Boyle, a sneaky feeling adept at creating chemical mixtures; and Arthur Hastings.

The layouts of various areas of the Game environment are generated procedurally by the Game at the beginning of each session. Each Act gives the player a primary plot objective and a number of main goals to fulfil, but there are also a number of optional side quests that can be done for bonus prizes. In addition to rewards, completing tasks can provide the player's character skill points that can be used to upgrade their character's skills or give them new abilities.

The Game, which is played first-person, combines aspects of role-playing, survival, and light roguelike. The fictional city of Wellington Wells is a crumbling dystopia on the verge of societal collapse caused by the overuse of a hallucinogenic drug that keeps its inhabitants blissfully unaware of the truth of their world while leaving them quickly manipulated and lacking in morals.
