Gameplay
An edge action-adventure Game called Card Shark is focused on card cheating and deceit. The player assumes the character of a mute child working in a bar in southern France[1], and the Comte de Saint Germain then hires him to assist in the theft of their rivals' money and trade secrets. To climb the French nobility ladder, one must learn about 28 different card trick tactics, each progressively more difficult and building on the one before.
One of the first tricks you learn is which way to wipe the table to tell your partner which suit of cards your opponent is holding. Later in the Game, it would be best to manage the deck's shuffling to ensure the Comte has the winning hand at the table. Your opponents start to suspect you if the prank takes too long or if the player shuffles the deck incorrectly; this is symbolized by a metre at the bottom of the screen, which fills up with time. If the metre reaches its total capacity, you'll have to deal with consequences like being asked to leave the salon, bankruptcy, or dying.
Plot
The setting for Card Shark is late 18th-century France. You play the part of a silent orphan working in a rural inn. The intriguing Comte de Saint Germain recruits you for a card scam against the volatile Colonel Gabriel after a fortuitous encounter. Gabriel accuses you of being responsible for an accident murder he committed after the con fails. The Comte decides to teach you the technique of con artistry after being sympathetic to your predicament and taking you under his wing. The mystery surrounding the Twelve Bottles of Milk, which appears to have connections to the same crown itself, eventually becomes clear to you and your new mentor as you travel throughout France to avoid the law.
