Storyline:

The protagonist is Robin, a friendly and innocent mechanic. She belongs in a universe where the administration has been overthrown by the evil religious organisation One Worry, overseen by a figure known as "Mother". Only authorised mechanics can touch the energy source "Ivory" that powers its devices. The troops of the One Concern find Robin and accuse her of being a thief and a heretic because of her efforts to aid those in crisis, although being a self-taught mechanic. This leads her to flee with her companions and fight against One Concern.

 

The One Concern reveres Ivory as a sacred material that is supposed to be present in all planet-wide matter. Fusing with a few people's bloods may give them superhuman capabilities to fuel machinery. Those who faultlessly stay alive during the procedure, such as Mom and her successor Royal, are exalted as Mediums, intended rulers of humanity with telekinetic control over all substances comprising Ivory. Those who sustain but are mutilated in the method become Agents and legal enforcers with great courage, lengthy life expectancies, and a variety of superpowers.

 

Ivory is extracted from the ocean floor using methods other than those used by the above dwellers, the Isi, who use technologies discovered during excavation to enable them to live underwater and practise a contradictory religion. The One Concern attacks the Isi militarily and calls them "pirates."
