Darkwood offers a novel viewpoint on survival horror. Darkwood has a somewhat open environment, and the player can access additional locales as the plot develops. It also has a crafting system, a day/night cycle, commerce, NPC interaction, a skill system, stealth, and combat, as well as many storylines that can be followed to change the world in various ways.
The player can scavenge for resources at several spots dotted across each biome during the day. They can also use this time to fix the doors or barriers surrounding their refuge or to make new items and enhancements at the workbench.
To unlock additional talents during the day, the player can "cook" hallucinogens on his stove. Any practical skill requires the player also to select a disadvantageous skill. The player cannot leave the hideout at night and must protect it from potential invaders until dawn. Making a defensive plan is essential, as players can set up traps and barricade windows or doors to slow down intruders.
How the player responds to NPC requests and actions influences the tale. Helping different people results in various outcomes and occasionally affects side stories involving various other NPCs.
In the second chapter, the Game changes to a new map, locking the earlier locations and introducing several new gameplay mechanics and NPCs. Many characters from the first chapter might also appear depending on the player's choices. Each character's subplot is determined by other, less significant events and which of the Game's two primary endings the player has attained.
By day, scavenge and explore the vast, dynamic free-roam world, then bunker down in your hiding place and wait for dawn.
