The player of The Escapists must escape from six different jails, ranging in difficulty from extremely easy to very hard. The next prison is unlocked after each prison escape. No matter how far along the player is, there are different jails available as downloadable content (DLC) that can be played in any sequence.

The player chooses their name at the start and the terms of the guards and captives if they so like. The Game begins with the player character waking up in their cell on day one after the names are chosen.

Players can buy, steal, or make numerous goods to help them escape from prison by combining two or more objects, such as toothpaste and talcum powder, which create putty that can be used to mould and imprint a key. Players can perform favours for their fellow convicts, and depending on how well-liked they are by the inmate, they will be paid after the turn is finished. Two examples of inmate favours are getting them a roll of duct tape or distracting the guards during roll call.

Your second stint in prison has brought you there, and your only option is to devise a way out. You decide how you approach it!

Why not invite a commotion inside? Or perhaps construct a tunnel straight beneath the prison's walls? Or maybe steal a guard uniform so you can seem like one of the captured?

The rigorous regulations you will be required to break during your prison term will keep you on your toes. Attend roll calls, work a prison job, and conceal your stolen craft supplies to avoid being seen by the guards, who are on the lookout for any escape attempts.
