Toki Tori's gameplay is a hybrid of two genres. While it appears to be a platform game, it is a puzzle game at heart. To advance in the game, the player must collect each egg in a level using a limited number of tools. Therefore, players must look ahead and plan carefully when using items like the Telewarp, Freeze-o-Matic, and InstantRockTM. As the player progresses through the game's 80+ levels spread across four distinct worlds, new tools are gradually introduced.

Gameplay

• Toki Tori's gameplay consists of using a limited number of tools to collect all of the eggs in the level in a single run-through in a set amount of time. At the start of each level, Toki Tori is given a set number of tools. 
• The puzzles are built around the tools, so they must be used wisely, and misusing a tool usually makes the level unbeatable.
• Enemies usually appear after a simple patrol of walking back and forth and turning when they encounter an obstacle. If they come into contact with Toki Tori, he will die instantly, forcing the player to restart the level. Some tools are weapons that can defeat these monsters; however, they must be used wisely to complete the level.
• In addition to the threat of monsters, a timer is constantly ticking. When the timer runs out, the player must restart the level.
