The protagonist of the novel at this point is Kay. The Master's best martial arts pupil is Kay, a brash young cat. Like many members of the various races, Kay rejects the Way and places more value on physical prowess and skill. Su Ling, his buddy, is so disgusted by this that she decides to leave his village in search of a place where she can still discover the Way to be revived. Shun's gorillas and the mayor of Kay's town announce one day that the martial arts school must be closed so that new "Din schools" can be built in the community. When his Master simply accepts the new rules, Kay is even more indignant.

The machine is powered by the fires of Waa-Lo, which then start to combine Shun and one of his bodyguards into a single, monster ape-like thing. Waa-Lo erupts as Kay throws the decisive blow. Fortunately, a hot-air balloon-based rescue crew is sent by the Avalanche.

Kay starts to attack the beast since she has no other option. 

Kay decides what he wants to do and sneaks into his Master's home at night (the Master is inebriated and unconscious) to grab the enchanted blade he keeps. Following that, Kay scales the town walls and enters the forest.

Kay's adventures include going to the Hartree, making a dragon friend, crossing perilous swamps to get to Frog City, and riding on a dragon to get to the Forbidden City, all the while fending off hordes of rats, crocodiles Kay discovers him in the Forbidden City there.

Kay discovers his friend Su Ling there in the Forbidden City. Su Ling is now the head of the Avalanche, a group of pandas committed to restoring the Way and thwarting Shun and the army of Din. After assisting them, the Avalanche sets out for the island of Waa-Lo with Kay along for the ride. After a difficult journey, Kay and the Avalanche start to explore the Waa-Lo caves as they make their Way to the volcano's core. Kay eventually catches up with Tak, the rat alchemist, during the mission. After overcoming him, Kay encounters Shun face-to-face. Kay prevails after a tough duel between the two. Shun, hurt, hurries to the device Tak and he built.
