Arrakis is a lot easier to survive with friends. Dune: Awakening is built as a shared, persistent world, so multiplayer is not a side feature. It is the whole point. But the setup can be confusing. Is it co-op? Can you play alone? Can you team up with friends on a different platform? This guide answers all your questions so you can pick the right way to play before you spend a single hour on the sand.
Is Dune: Awakening Multiplayer or Co-op?
Honestly speaking, it is a multiplayer survival game with MMO-style features, not a traditional co-op game. You do not host a private world on your own console and invite a buddy in. Instead, you join a server that is shared with other players, and you choose whether to team up with them.
That said, there are now several ways to play:
- Official multiplayer servers: Shared worlds with other players, guilds, and large-scale events
- Private servers: Your own server, rented or self-hosted, where you set many of the rules
- Single-player mode: A full solo mode added in Update 1.5, with no other players in the world
How Servers Work: Hagga Basin and the Deep Desert
The world is split into two main areas. Each Hagga Basin instance holds up to around 40 players, and this is where most of the early game happens. Later, you can travel to the Deep Desert, a huge open zone that connects several servers together, with each one supporting up to 100 players. That means hundreds of people can share the same endgame space at once.

How to Play With Friends: Parties
Parties are the easiest way to team up. Through the social menu, you can add friends, form a party, and see where they are on your map. A few things to know:
- Parties are small, so they are best for a regular squad rather than a big crew
- Everyone should pick the same server, or you will not be able to join each other
- If you cannot join a friend, their party may already be full
- Some vehicles, like upgraded sandbikes, can carry more than one passenger
Guilds: Playing With a Bigger Crew
Guilds are the big group option. A guild can hold up to 32 members, and guild members show up as friendly, so you cannot attack each other in PvP zones. You can also see each other on the map while online.
Guilds matter for more than chat. Membership is needed to take part in the weekly Landsraad event, where guilds earn votes through crafting and deliveries or by fighting over control points in the Deep Desert. Guild membership also lets you work together on Spice harvesting and other late-game goals that are tough to handle alone.
PvP vs PvE: Do You Have to Fight Other Players?
Not anymore, as PvP is optional on the console release, and the Deep Desert can be explored as a PvE area. That is a big change from the early days, when the endgame felt built for hardcore PvP guilds.
If you do choose PvP, expect real risk. Open sand in the Deep Desert is a perfect spot for ambushes, especially near valuable Spice fields, so keep an eye out for groups you do not know.
Base Sharing and Permissions
Playing together also means building together. You can share buildings and vehicles with your group, and you can assign roles to control who can access and build what. The main roles are Owner, Co-owner, and Associate, and you can set objects like doors and machines to guild-only or public. Shared building also lets one player lay out a structure while others gather the materials.
What About Single-Player Mode?
Single-player arrived with Update 1.5 on September 22, 2026. It gives you the full game with no other players and no PvP at all. There is one catch worth knowing: single-player is not co-op. You cannot invite a friend into your solo world, and single-player characters stay in that mode.
If you want to play mostly alone but still have friends nearby, a private server is the better choice. You can start solo and invite friends later, and they can join even when you are offline. Just remember that a private server is still online play, so you need a connection. Also, official server characters can move to a private server but cannot move back.
Crossplay: Can You Play With Friends on Other Platforms?
This is where plans can fall apart. At launch, crossplay between PC, PS5, and Xbox is not supported. The exception is Xbox and the Windows PC Store version, which work together through Xbox Play Anywhere. Steam and PS5 players are on separate ecosystems. Funcom has said broader crossplay is planned, but there is no confirmed date, so make sure your whole group is on a compatible platform before you buy. Tips for Playing Dune: Awakening With Friends
- Pick the same server first, as it saves a lot of frustration
- Split roles and let one player scout, another gather, and another handle building
- Share water and supplies because Hydration is a group problem too
- Do not wander alone in the Deep Desert and stick together or bring guild backup
- Set base permissions early as it avoids arguments and accidental demolition

Choose single-player if you want a calm, PvP-free story experience. Choose a private server if you want a small circle of friends and control over the rules. Choose an official multiplayer server if you love big guild battles, the Landsraad, and the Deep Desert at full scale.
