Gameplay

The Game's fundamental mechanism is a die-pool system; players roll one pooling of ten-sided dies against the task's target number, or TN, to complete tasks. The number of dice that match or surpass the TN determines the task's Level of success.

In TRoS, each player creates up to five metaphysical traits for their characters, defining the qualities they wish those characters to possess and exhibit. There are several possibilities, such as faith (defending a philosophy or religion), passions (intense feelings of love or hate), conscience (personal ethics), drive (a powerful intent or purpose), fate (a future foreseen), and luck (general good fortune and coincidence). This technique offers players more control over how their characters perform in-game by giving the player more dice anytime the character encounters a challenge in a moment where the player wants his personality to shine. Because the hero can lose yet has incredible luck and perseverance during the essential parts of the plot, it lends the Game a faintly cinematic sense.

The Game's mechanic for character growth and advancement is the Spiritual Attributes. When characters behave in ways that match their qualities, the Game master awards points to those attributes. Players can then use those points to upgrade their characters' characteristics, abilities, weapon proficiency, and other traits.
