The dreary, grey Void, which is only occasionally infused with Sparks of Color, is a strange world. It allows the player to explore, get to know the Sisters, Brothers, and other odd creatures that live there, and learn the ways of Color by harvesting it and creating sigils that alter the environment.

When a person's soul is extinguished, it briefly goes through The Void, a grey limbo given new life by the few droplets of Color sprinkled throughout it. Sisters who are seductive and cunning demand to be fed, while ravenous, monstrous Brothers beckon the soul to preserve every last bit of it. Every droplet of Color utilised causes the entire Void, also home to various strange and occasionally terrifying animals, to shift, causing every action you take to impact the whole world.

However, there can be another application for the Color. The means to escape the Void's never-ending cycle. The player has the chance to uncover it—and reach ultimate transcendence—by nourishing Color in gardens and combating the Void's creatures, opening the Sisters' hearts and facing their Brothers.
