Star Ocean: The Last Hope, a Game by Square Enix and tri-Ace, is set at the start of the Star Ocean series.

With exploration and combat taking place on some of the universe's most enigmatic, dangerous, and fascinating worlds, this action-packed RPG transports players on the epic journey of humanity's final stand.

A new Rush Gauge and Blindsides are the new elements in The Last Hope, which uses the same real-time warfare Engine as earlier games in the series. Players can utilise a special attack or ability or launch a preemptive strike against an opponent using the Rush gauge. Each character will have a unique Rush gauge that they can use. By swiftly sneaking behind an enemy out of their line of sight and striking them from behind, blindsides allow the player to counterattack an enemy targeting them. The system has undergone some notable changes, one of which is the return of the four-character battle system from the original two Star Ocean titles.

Attacking adversaries in Star Ocean: The Last Hope were Edge, Faize, Reimi, and Lyme.

The SRF-003 Calanus, a spaceship launched by the USTA to explore uncharted territory, has a novel feature that lets the player assume command of it. The Calanus has a flight deck where the player can choose the planet he wants to visit, a leisure area where the player's teammates can congregate and socialise, and a conference room where the player meets with the crew to brainstorm new ideas for item manufacture.

The player and his teammates can practise combat in the Arena's battle simulator, a feature from earlier games like Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. The player can decide which crew members share a room in the quarters, and the right pairings can result in extraordinary interactions between characters known as Private Actions.

The Star Ocean series' recurring Private Action system allows the Game's central character, Edge, to communicate with his teammates. The player can build a relationship with them by engaging in conversation while resting after an adventure or combat. 

Making the right decisions during actions would open up extraordinary sequences or events involving Edge and the teammate. Characters together develop a connection that opens up additional PA events. A unique "Rage" mode that permits nearby players to attack enemies with greater strength can be unlocked if a member suffers a severe injury during combat.
