Raging titans have destroyed the world and brought humanity to the verge of extinction in this novel, which is set some years after Risen's conclusion. Monstrous animals then emerged from the unfathomable depths of the sea, and their assaults ended all maritime activity. The protagonist, now a member of the Inquisition, is dispatched to determine how to complete the mayhem brought on by these creatures from the deep. His search is motivated by tales that the pirates who visit the southern islands are the only people who know how to finally exterminate the beasts and put an end to their reign of terror.

Risen 2: Dark Waters, which has a brand-new pirate-based theme, intends to blend the beloved classic RPG gameplay elements of the first Risen with a brand-new theme and setting on a wide range of themed island destinations. Risen 2: Dismal Waters is a third-person role-playing game that keeps the most immersive aspects of the first Risen while allowing players to change the game environment based on their choices. It is set in a grim and dark realm. These decisions will enable the character to access new features, paths, and skills. Risen 2 will be situated in the most immersive RPG game world ever, with a fully dynamic environment and an entire day/night cycle that affects numerous facets of the game world.

 Gameplay

In the action role-playing game Risen 2, players assume third-person control of the main character to explore the virtual environment, perform quests, and modify the character's skills. While the player character's physical appearance cannot be altered, other features like attire and skill sets can.

Players can enhance five essential characteristics as the game progresses, each focusing on a particular type of gameplay. While "Firearms" focuses on pistols, rifles, and other gunpowder-based weaponry, the "Blades" characteristic governs proficiency and use of swords, daggers, throwing weapons, and other slashing/thrusting weaponry. While "Cunning" focuses on stealth, including sneaking, thieving, and convincing other characters, "Toughness" governs the amount of damage that may be sustained from various attacks. The "Voodoo" trait is focused on the employment of dark magic and other potentially lethal and non-lethal rituals.

Each attribute includes a wide range of "Talents," which are skills that stand in for various advantages and abilities. Due to its versatility, players can concentrate on multiple skills and abilities depending on how they want to play, such as traditional fighting, magic, stealth, or dirty tricks.
