The game is set on Mars in 2175, fifty years after the events of Red Faction: Guerilla The surface of Mars has become uninhabitable since liberation. This happened when Adam Hale, the game's main antagonist, destroyed the massive Terraformer machine on Mars that provided its Earth-like atmosphere, causing super-tornadoes and potentially disastrous lightning storms to envelop the planet. The Colonists were compelled to evacuate to the underground mines of Mars, which their ancestors had developed, creating a network of habitable tunnels beneath the planet's surface and establishing colonies there.
