A day before the start of the original Game, the Game begins in Paris with journalist Nicole Collard being asked to visit the Palais-Royal to interview Pierre Carchon, a well-known media mogul and probable candidate for president of France. Nico ignores the mime loitering outside Carchon's house and continues inside. She meets Carchon, who explains that he knew Thierry Collard, Nico's father, very well. She also meets Carchon's wife, Imelda. The drawing room soon starts to make noise, and as Carchon goes to inspect, he is fatally shot. Nico arrives on the scene quickly and sees the mime covering Pierre's body. Before she can act, she is slammed to the ground, and when she wakes up, Imelda is on the phone calling the police.
Imelda grants Nico entry to Carchon's room after convincing her that she wants to learn the truth and offer assistance. This room is home to an elephant carving that Nico inherited from her father, who created it himself, and a stone cylinder with a secret letter code. Nico investigates the pier where the Conciergerie was after finding a ticket on Carchon's corpse inscribed with the words "Bateaux de la Conciergerie." She finds a hidden office space where Carchon and many others met for business using the letters on the cylinder. Ronnie, her editor, instructs her to abandon her story once she has finished writing it, which infuriates Nico.
