Gameplay
Top-down viewing is used to play How to Survive. Story and Challenge are the two available Game types; up to two people can play in each. The player(s) in challenge mode start on one of the islands, and they have to journey to the other side, where their escape car is waiting. The player aims to gather resources, construct weapons, and leave the island alive. The player cannot take their time because neither the Challenge nor the plot is timed.
Plot
Gamers take on the role of one of three individuals stranded on one of four horror islands that make up an archipelago: the all-around Kenji, the quick, arczar Abbie, or the brawling Jack. The survivor encounters Ramon, an older adult with one leg who owns a boat that may be used to move between the islands, after providing Andrew, another wounded survivor who has already been bitten by a zombie, with food. Together, they devise a scheme to use a beached seaplane, with Andrew serving as the pilot, to escape the archipelago. Ramon orders the survivor to get supplies to fix the aircraft.
A mysterious guy in full armour named Kovac, who has declared the islands his hunting ground, soon encounters the survivor. Kovac, a self-described "master survivor," eagerly steps into the role of mentor, providing the survivor with helpful tips and resources during the Game's course while also using his enormous field knowledge to write a zombie guidebook ("Kovac's Rules").
The survivor encounters Carol, a mother whose little daughter, Emily, got lost from her while they were searching. Unable to prevent Emily from slipping into the water and being washed away, the survivor finds Emily trapped on a cliffside; Carol is horrified by the news. The plane is fixed, but Ramon sees that Andrew is (clearly) not fit to fly it, so he sends the survivor looking for a qualified pilot.
The survivor encounters Martha, a frail older adult who is missing her friend Enzo (who turns out to be a cat). After getting Enzo back, the survivor hears from her about a nearby intoxicated ex-pilot named Sanchez. As the survivor discovers that Sanchez is a drug smuggler who lost all his goods in the plane accident, he must search the entire archipelago for his scattered packages to gain cooperation.
Along the way, the survivor locates Emily, frees her from her jail, and reunites her with Carol. The girl states that a strange man, whose face she never saw, kidnapped her; her evidence, combined with Carol's assertion that the same man was in charge of steering the ship she was on towards the reefs, makes it clear that Kovac is not what he first appears to be.
