Gunfire Games created and released Chronos, a role-playing action Game, in 2016 for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset. At the time of its release, the Game mainly garnered favourable reviews. On December 1, 2020, Chronos: Before the Ashes, an updated Game version, was made available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Stadia.

Gameplay

Although Chronos only has a fixed camera, it is an action role-playing Game with a third-person viewpoint akin to the first Resident Evil games. A customisable protagonist on a mission to slay a dragon inside a labyrinth is controlled by the player in the Game. Using melee weapons to cut adversaries while deflecting enemy strikes with a shield is the primary fighting strategy in the Game. If the player passes away while exploring, they can only revisit the maze one in-game year after, and their character will age, changing some of their characteristics. Solving puzzles, getting new weapons, and unlocking magical abilities are all possible as the player advances through the Game.

It's understandable if you're tired of hearing "it's like Dark Souls," but... Dark Souls meets Chronos. A bit. The combat and music design are similar, although Chronos handles death more frequently than the Souls games, with a fascinating, albeit underused, ageing mechanism and less punishment. Indeed, compared to other Souls games, this is considerably gentler. It's not required to get good.
