A 2D combat simulation title called Guilty Gear XX was created by Arc System Works and released by Sammy Studios. It was initially launched on May 23, 2002, for the arcades in Japan. Later, the developer made a PlayStation 2 version, which was then cast in North America in 2003. Guilty Gear XX Reload (2003), Guilty Gear XX Slash (2005), Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (2006), Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus (2008), and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R are the Game's upgraded editions for various platforms (2012). Each update, released on several platforms and in multiple areas, helped the business improve compared to earlier versions.

Guilty Gear X2's 5th and most recent upgrade is Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R. It was made available in Europe on February 14, 2013, and on April 23, 2013, in North America.
