King Arthur is about to be attacked by a vast army assembled in front of the castle gates! So how did it get to this point?

The German-style card game Citadel allows the player to witness significant occasions in the legendary king's past and travel with him and his army into an uncertain future. It is up to you to change the course of history and restore the pride, glory, and dominion of the Arthurian family!

Right or wrong? The choice is entirely up to you! You learn about both sides of the conflict through two lengthy campaigns.

Gameplay

Character choosing and action-taking are the two phases that make up each round of gameplay.

First, characters are chosen through a draught that is only partially hidden. Then, each character has a unique in-game impact that the player selecting that character can use to activate during the turn's subsequent phase.

Each player, starting with the one holding the crown counter, secretly selects a character card before the hand is passed to the following player. Only a select few characters are accessible in each round, which adds more strategy to the game.

Characters that aren't available are chosen randomly and may be shown or hidden depending on how many players participate. In addition, players might be given the option to select a second character, giving them two "turns" in the following phase of the round, depending on the number of players in the game.

Characters are called out to begin their actions when character selection is complete. Characters chosen (either intentionally or because they weren't among the options offered) are ignored, and the following character begins their action phase. The activities include:

• Taking money.
• Getting more district cards.
• Building' district cards.
• Using particular skills unique to each character.

• Build impregnable fortresses, outfit them with soldiers, ditches, and palisades, and use your defence buildings to destroy the hordes of foes!
• Victory is not guaranteed by a stronghold alone! Create a solid infrastructure and control your resources.
• Your approach will determine whether you win or lose! You won't survive the sieges unless you have the ideal mix of defence structures, units, raw material extraction, and production.
• Play spectacular fights that feature realistic destruction! Build your army up of a variety of different units. However, watch for falling debris and factor terrain into your battle strategy.
• Legendary characters can be unlocked! Gain the help of renowned heroes by completing specified tasks, giving you tactical benefits in combat.
