Ubisoft is under fire yet again for the constant debacle which is Assassin’s creed Shadows, the next instalment in the assassin’s creed series set in Japan set to release on November 12th 2024. Ubisoft can’t seem to catch a break with yet another controversy as the developers of the game Accidently using a Japanese battle flag without permission, leading to Ubisoft’s apology.
Set in feudal Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period at the beginning of 1579. This era represents the final stage of the Sengoku period, a time of intense civil war amongst rival clans and political upheaval in Japan. You take control of two protagonists in a game who themselves are part of many controversies due to their portrayal and players’ demands for a lack of a Japanese Male protagonist in a game set in Japan itself. The first being Yasuke based on a real life historical figure, the first ever black samurai in Japan and the female ninja Naoe.
Now, Ubisoft is under more pressure than ever before for portraying a Japanese battle flag without permission. The flag in question is of the Japanese military re-enactment group Sekigahara Teppo-tai (or Sekigahara Rifle Corps). The flag was used in the game’s cover art to promote it on different levels.
Ubisoft has issued an apology on their social media accounts to the Japanese people and their Japanese fans. Also stating that the controversial flag would be removed from the game, but they will not be recalling the hardcover art book included in the $279 collector’s edition, which features a range of physical goodies.
The decision to retain the art book is likely due to the fact that it has already been printed and cannot be easily altered at this stage. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is scheduled for release on November 12. However, this resolution has not satisfied Sekigahara Teppo-tai, who continue to express their dissatisfaction with the situation.
Earlier too due to all this debacle, Japanese gamers filed a petition demanding the cancellation of the game which has reached over 83000 signatures from the masses, it is highly unlikely that Ubisoft will Cancel one of its major franchises only months away from its launch on November 12th 2024.
