The Game Awards are just around the corner. We have some predictions for the winners, let’s see if these games win the trophy or not. Check out our predictions.
7. Best Narrative
Prediction: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
The commendable developers and publisher Square Enix have done it again. Final FANTASY VII Rebirth came out on 29th February 2024 and was the most-anticipated game of the year. Every Final Fantasy game introduces a new story for the players to seek their teeth into and this time it was the story of Cloud Strife and his journey. This game is one of the best Action sequences we have ever experienced.
Why it should win:
- Storyline: The Storyline of this game follows our protagonist, Cloud Strife. People have called the storyline of this game Square Enix’s magnum opus because of its genius. Explore the world in search of Sephiroth, explore the entire planet after a catastrophic event.
- Characters: The main characters and the supporting cast were some of the most interesting additions to this game. The storyline is basically carried on the backs of these people. The storyline was given life with the back stories and depth of characters like Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, Cait Sith, etc.
- Mini-games: The best part about this game was the mini-games you can play where you will always be surprised. These mini-games made sure to give you an experience of something you hadn’t done before. Not only were these hilarious but also interesting and involved a lot of thought.
6. Best Score and Music
Prediction: Silent Hill 2
We have all experienced and traveled on the journey James has to take. Silent Hill 2 is one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year. If they win this title it wouldn’t be surprising. The game follows a horror/mysterious storyline where you need to search for traces of your wife through this thrilling adventure. If you were surprised and scared at some point in the game, it was probably because of the eerie soundtrack.
Why it should win:
- Soundtrack: Obviously, the soundtrack of this game trumps every other game, in my opinion. The soundtrack is perfectly ambient and scary where it needs to be. The soundtrack is the backbone of a successful game and Silent Hill 2 had the best one this year has seen.
- The Flow of the Story: Because the game follows an investigative storyline and is supported by a great soundtrack, it helps the player maintain their focus and doesn’t break away from the immersion.
- Sticking to the Genre: The game stuck to its horror and mysterious genre. Some games in the market claim to be scary but end up being only thrilling with a few jumpscares. However, Silent Hill 2 will give you goosebumps and make your heart skip a beat till the end.
5. Best Ongoing Game
Prediction: Helldivers 2
A third-person shooter game, Helldivers 2 invites you on a fun quest to fight the hostile galaxy with your best mates. The co-op experience will stay with you for a lifetime. The game hasn’t reached its finish line yet and we hope it never does.
Why it should win:
- Multiplayer Mode: The multiplayer mode in this game allows a lot of freedom for the players. The game is in fact, enjoyed with your best friends. You must check out their multiplayer mode if you haven’t yet.
- The Gameplay: The gameplay is quite immersive and depends on how well you perform with your team. This game will teach you to become a legend while you play with a highly professional team of attackers.
- No Progression Trackers: The best thing about this game is that you can pick up where you left off. Even if it is after a few days or weeks. The game has no progression trackers or daily rewards you need to achieve. This feature helps people to remain interested in the game and doesn’t cause any boredom or repetitive fatigue.
4. Best Independent Game
Prediction: Lorelei and the Laser Eyes
A game that has been on our minds since it was released. This game is the best puzzle-solving and thriller game yet. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes follows the protagonist on a journey to find out the truth about what’s going on in a Hotel in Central Europe. The game has one of the most commendable storylines.
Why it should win:
- The Gameplay: This game begins with a puzzle that you need to solve to delve into the game. There are so many different aspects that you need to solve to get access and open up more avenues.
- Characters: In Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, the characters are not shown as real people and follow a very cartoony make-up for the characters. Despite this, the game maintains a serious and complex aesthetic.
- The Concept: The concept of this game is fresh and has not been thought of before. The game has a puzzle-heavy investigation that needs to be solved. The aesthetic, production, and development of this game are quite unique from other games nominated in the same category.
3. Best Debut Indie Game
Prediction: The Plucky Squire
We were hoping for this game to make the Indie Game nomination this year. The Plucky Squire is a fun and light game that follows a squire from a storybook to discover a world outside it. There are some puzzles and tasks you need to solve that would require you to switch between the 2D and 3D modes of the game. This game should get a sequel with the way it has been accepted with open arms by the gamers.
Why it should win:
- The Characters: The characters of this game are cute and keep you busy with their bright colors. It’s a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In fact, some characters in this game have unique names which fit perfectly into the aesthetic of the game.
- Nostalgia: This game is nostalgic because it reminds the player of a simpler time. It brings our childhood dream of seeing our favorite characters from storybooks come to life. This feature of this game brings out the nostalgia in each player.
- The 2D and 3D Feature: One of the most unique features of this game is the switch between 2D and 3D. The character, Jot needs to solve some puzzles which he can only do with things he finds outside in the real world. The back and forth in the game is what makes it exciting and interesting.
2. Best Game Direction
Prediction: Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
This game is a DLC of the base game and has been enjoyed more than the actual game this year. Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree has blown away the fans with its content updates and features. These updates were overdue and have made the game more interesting. Elden Ring deserves this title because the game is made and shot beautifully. With that, it also introduces new angles to previous challenges and provides a fresh perspective to the game.
Why it should win:
- New Content: There is new content available to the players with this new DLC. This allows the fans to commit and connect deeply with the game.
- Recaptures the Magic: This DLC recaptures the magic of the base game and provides a twist on the game. It retains the best features of the game and adds more content to keep the game relevant and interesting.
- Focused Map: A focused map was added to this DLC which has helped people to have better interlocking in the game. Now the players can visit more locales and places to discover the adventure hidden in them.
1. Game of the Year
Prediction: Black Myth: Wukong
Is this even surprising? The most popular game of the year, Black Myth Wukong will lift the trophy this year. Following the Chinese mythological attributes, this game follows impressive graphics with its storyline which helps the gamer to stay captured by the game.
Why it should win:
- The Vision for the Game: The vision of the game is quite unique which is what makes it stand out from others in this category. This Action RPG is among one of the first to combine a traditional concept with modern technology. It also follows a genius gameplay which just helps its cause.
- Combat Mechanics: The combat mechanics of the game help the player to think quickly and practice different techniques to attack their opponents. The varied enemies also help the player to engage in mediocre and challenging battles.
- Atmosphere/ Environment: The atmosphere fits the narrative perfectly. The game is full of Chinese mythological facts and trinkets that help to tie in the entire story. In fact, the clues are also accessed through Chinese rituals. I think that’s a beautiful way to add tradition to a highly modern and action-based RPG game.
