IGI games have been a fan favorite forever. The first game in the first-person shooter franchise, Project IGI, dropped in 2000, followed by a sequel, IGI 2: Covert Strike, in 2003. After the first two games were massively successful, a remake called IGI Origins was announced in 2019. But much wasn’t given away about it. Fans were confused about what was going on, and continue to wait for updates even today. Let’s find out what’s happening with the IGI Remake.
The IGI Remake
IGI Remake, titled IGI Origins, was announced back in 2019 by publisher Toadman Interactive. The team said that the shooter game was under development in 2019, and some details about it were revealed in 2021. A reveal trailer was also dropped, showcasing how the gameplay will be. But no further info was given, which put the future of the game at risk.
IGI Origins is a tactical first-person shooter set in the 1980s Cold War, before the events of the 2000 game, Project IGI. You will explore the Institute for Global Intelligence and use stealth to complete missions. You will take on the role of Michael King, codenamed as Regent, an ex-SAS soldier, recruited by MI6 for covert operations. It will be a deadly journey full of a lot of action and adventure.
Studio Shut Down
Antimatter Games, the studio developing IGI Origins, is now shut down. This news came around two years ago in the Summer of 2023, and conveyed that the game was canceled and was not in production anymore. The parent company of the studio, Enad Global 7, said that the decision to shut down the studio was made ‘after exploring various strategic options.’
‘The Group evaluated various strategic options for AMG, including work-for-hire (WFH), studio sale, and third-party publishing partnerships for IGI, the title AMG has been developing over the last few years,’ Enad Global 7 said. ‘However, these efforts have not produced sufficient traction within the Group’s target timeline. As a result, the Board has made the decision to limit further investment and move towards closing the studio.’
Summary
We never got a release date for the game, but it is still listed on Steam as ‘coming soon.’ This makes us suspect that the action game will be picked up by another studio. But we can’t conclude what’s happening with the IGI Remake until we get an official word on the project. The game is still highly anticipated, and fans are hoping for some official update saying the game has gone under development again. Let’s hope for the best.
