Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Gameplay Breakdown

Good lord! Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is almost here and if you’re a grimdark fanboy/girl your mind is about to be blown. Saber Interactive is back with a vengeance, bringing you a sequel that’s not just a throwback to the 2011 classic but an evolved beast of its own. Let’s see what Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 gameplay is like.

Intense World-Building

From the moment you start playing, you are being flung into a world of grim, battle-scarred life leftovers. Suddenly, you find yourself thrown directly into the middle of a chaotic Imperial Guard staging area with everything screaming Warhammer 40K.

The insane attention to detail would pull you deep into the grimdark universe. From the snap of a bowing Militarum unit to rousing speeches by commanders or punishment dished out by Commissars, the game brings you closer to the action.

Combat: A Brutal Ballet of War

This game wants more than just button-mashing; it’s the hack-and-slash of the thinking marine. The revamping of the combat system blends well, bolting the contrasted ranges of firepower with brutal melee action to bring out a rhythm that is not only challenging but also crazily satisfying. Instead of swishing your chainsword wildly, you’ll master dodges, parries, and gun strikes to survive the non-stop waves of Tyranids and Chaos Space Marines.

At first, the game’s combat mechanics are somewhat overwhelming, with the number of different enemy types, inputs, and abilities to juggle at play here in your first playthrough. Once you get the gist of it, though, everything clicks. You parry an attack to deliver a devastating counter, dodge a lethal strike, and then slice through a group of enemies with your chainsword. This is the brutal ballet of war that Space Marine 2 delivers. And trust me, it’s as satisfying as it sounds . . .

Strategic Choices in the Heat of Battle

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 isn’t just a mindless killing spew (though there’s a lot of that too, though). Game throws you into having to think strategically, especially when you’re facing wide hordes. Do you focus on whittling away the smaller mobs to give yourself some breathing room? Or do you go straight for the larger enemies, hoping to disrupt their synaptic link and weaken the horde? Right choice at the right time determines whether you win or die with a nasty accident.

But there is this veritable diversity of enemies, each with his particular challenge. Ranging from poison-tipped thorn-wielding ranged enemies to actually psychic-powers-providing Zoanthropes to their buffing allies, prepare to stay on your toes and adapt strategy on the fly. And just when you start to be in the flow, then Space Marine 2 throws you curves by surprising you through ambushes or other type of enemy you haven’t seen before, sending you on the edge of your seat.

Execution and Armor Management

Space Marine 2 amps up the cool factor with its execution system. You link together a series of attacks, parries, and dodges, and then execute brutal killings that are both highly impressive and pretty handy! Every execution you do refills a bit of armor, keeping you in the fight longer. This adds some strategy to the game: it forces you to constantly weigh the need to press forward and make those executions to top off your armor.

Unlike the original game, where you healed through executions, in Space Marine 2 you have consumable stims that you need to scavenge throughout the level to recover. This heightened tension forces you to be far more observant and cautious with your resources. You cannot charge in wildly; you need to think ahead and time your moves.

Chaos and Tyranids: A Perfect Storm

One of the crown jewels in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is the addition of Chaos Space Marines, especially the Thousand Sons. These dudes are something else. Imagine walking into a massive plaza where the Tyranids and Chaos forces are holding a hand-to-hand street battle with Tyranids. It’s a chaotic, high-density attack environment that evokes equal parts thrills and fear.

Though, the game’s boss fights deserve praise and especially the fight with a Thousand Sons Sorcerer. Not a fight about force-one must see this one, as warpmagick transforms the very environment into a nightmarish arena of brains with eyes cracking the walls, ground as in liquid. All that man can do is dodge spellcasting attempts, trying to land a hit on this foe. It is moments like these that really show attention to detail and going beyond what can be expected in a game to really get the Warhammer 40K universe on screen.

Co-op Mode: Bringing the Squad Together

Co-op is available in Operations, teaming three players up to do missions running in tandem with the main story. In reality, those missions feel very tightly bound to the campaign, so they don’t feel tacked-on as a mode of play.

Just one good example of each class in co-op introduces the player to a different gameplay style-from the high-hitting Assault to the all strategized Sniper and more. Class variety makes sure that every playthrough will never be the same, and that’s because the AI director changes up the enemy encounters based on the composition of your team and your playstyle. Want to mess around with new weapons or perhaps just take it easy? Co-op mode has you covered.
