Sony on November 26 confirmed that the PlayStation 2 had sold over 160 Million Units since its launch in the year 200. Now after nearly 24 years, the pioneering console has stayed on top of the sales chart even after two decades to its name. The console in its long life became the most dominant force on the gaming market and remains a top-seller with the Nintendo Switch right being in the second spot with 146 Million Units sold.
Original Launch of the PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 2 was originally released during the Y2K age in the year 2000. The PS2 succeeded the original PlayStation and was a leap in technology from the original, with its backward compatible features, DualShock controller, and a huge leap in graphical fidelity. The PlayStation 2 was powered by an Emotion Engine CPU made in collaboration between Sony and Toshiba which gave it the most needed computing power turning it into the most powerful video game console on the market.
The PS2 was launched at an MSRP of $299 and was not just a video game console but an affordable DVD player as well. This feature alone grossed the sales number for Sony as many families bought the console for its DVD player feature when the technology was relatively new. The console received an upgrade with the console receiving a slimmed-down version known as the PlayStation 2 Slim.
Breaking the Milestone
After its release, the PlayStation 2 took the world by storm and became part of not just the video game Hall of Fame but the entertainment industry as well. Sony supported the console with many first-party titles and offerings, giving the players exclusive experience only available on the PlayStation. This made the console sell like hotcakes and during its lifetime to date has sold over 160 Million Units making it the Top-selling console of all time.
The console was available to purchase and Sony kept on producing new units till 2013 when the new PlayStation 4 launched the same year. The PS2 launched many of the household names for many of Sony’s first-party titles like the God of War Series, Ratch and Clank, Crash Bandicoot, and more.
Summary
This achievement has firmly cemented Sony’s groundbreaking console as a force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry. With sales soaring into the millions, the PlayStation continues to dominate as an unstoppable powerhouse. However, this record may not hold for long, as Nintendo’s immensely popular handheld console, the Nintendo Switch, is closing in fast. Having already reached an impressive 146 million units sold, Nintendo is poised to shake things up further with the anticipated launch of their next-generation console on the horizon.
