Red Dead Redemption 2 | Still worth it in 2024?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is by far one of the greatest video games to ever grace the gaming world. Players are thrust into a story so deep and rich that it compels multiple walkthroughs of the game just to enjoy every element it presents to the player, combined with excellent gameplay that gives players the ultimate control of their character and surroundings. Let’s take a look if Red Dead Redemption 2 is still worth its metal in 2024 after 6 years of its release.

Story & Setting

Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in Late 19th century, starting at the helm of the Industrial revolution in America and the decline of the American Frontier and the lawless Wild West. Players take control of Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van Der Linde Gang, a group of miscreants outlaws dead set on their ideology of survival of the fittest and the outlaw life. Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as a prequel to the original Red Dead title which Featured John Marston along with members of the Van Der Linde gang.

The story of the game focuses on the bond and the narrative of the individual gang members with Arthur at the centre of all the drama, being the right hand man to the leader of the group Dutch Van Der Linde. The story picks off after a botched robbery by the gang in Blackwater, now hunted by the law and on the run the Van Der Linde must do all it can to survive the ruthless pursuit by lawmen across the different states and terrain each with their own unique environment and people.

A Playable Movie

Throughout the game Arthur has to deal with his inner demons and his own morality with his actions finally bearing fruit and presenting him with the consequences he never thought would come to pass. Each and every character in the story from the heroes to the villains and even the multiple NPC’s you encounter feels like a living and breathing person. With such a well voice acted cast and amazing motion capture, sometimes you can be so immersed in the cutscenes that you might just forget you are playing a video game.

The core of Red Dead Redemption 2 is its narrative, slow at first but when players are through with the initial beginning levels of the game and reach the town of Valentine which serves as the starting point with total freedom now handed to the player. The game picks up with multiple story missions to choose from with a plethora of Side content and miscellaneous activities ready to be experienced.

The Beauty of Red Dead Redemption lays in its characters and their motivations for reference players throughout the game know that Dutch Van Der Linde is a man dead set on burning all those who come between the gang and their escape to freedom with a moral compass which doesn’t point north at all, yet you put your faith in him because of the level of confidence and charisma Dutch carries, the excellent voice acting from the cast makes each and every dialogue convincing and real.

Gameplay

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an action-adventure set in a vast and very detailed open-world which spans across 5 states which are combined and  very beautifully turned into one map with Snow peaks, gator infested swamps, rich plains and living and breathing towns and cities. The game immerses players in this richly detailed world where they can engage in various activities such as hunting, fishing, and interacting with NPCs. The anchor for its gameplay is its fantastic shooting mechanics and the gun gameplay. Players can choose from  a variety of guns and equipment staying true to the time period with gritty cowboy revolvers to hunting rifles. Combined with the realistic gunplay which pulls away and places the player right into the middle of a gunfight which feels real due to the realistic mechanics and ballistics which go into every bullet fired.

Each and every gunfight feels real and immersive with bullets ricocheting off surfaces, every hit on an enemy feels real with blood and ragdoll physics which feels as if a real person has been shot due to the behaviour of the NPC’s. One of the signature features of the game is the Dead Eye targeting system. This allows players to slow down time and mark multiple targets, making it easier to take down enemies quickly and accurately. Dead eye has been the standout feature for the gun gameplay for the Red Dead Series, which takes inspiration from classic westerns and dramas.

Another feature of Red Dead is the Horses and their utility in game which is not just for traversing the map but how horses are also utilised in action sequences and combat. The game features a wide variety of horse breeds, each with distinct attributes such as speed, stamina, and handling. Players can tame wild horses and enhance their bond through activities like feeding, grooming, and regular riding, which improve the horse’s performance and unlock new abilities. Horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 are more than just animals as over time Arthur builds a strong bond with his loyal companion adding another element of storytelling to the game.

Graphics & Soundtrack

Upon its release Red Dead Redemption 2 became a benchmark and industry standard for AAA titles with its graphic capability. It’s not shy to say that even after 6 years of its release the game puts to shame many new titles which came after it. The attention to detail of this game is beyond for any to compete with as there is no competition to begin with, the depth of the game world and models is truly breathtaking. From the lighting to the detailed textures, a dynamic weather cycle and realistic physics it is a sight to behold. On high-end systems like the PS5 and Xbox series X, the game showcases its full graphical potential, while still providing a visually impressive experience on lower-end systems like the PS4 and Xbox 1.

Even if your music taste differs from the western style of the genre, you still will feel blown away by the composition of the game’s soundtrack which is a cherry on top with all the features as it provides the excellent ambiance to every bit of the game. Composed by the very talented Woody Jackson and various supporting artists. Whether you are roaming around on a horse through the plains or in a shootout escaping the law, the soundtrack brings everything together and ties it up nicely with a bow. The Tracks range from haunting and sorrowful to uplifting and triumphant, mirroring the protagonist Arthur Morgan’s journey and the gang’s struggles. The soundtrack helps to convey the complex emotions and narrative arcs of the game.
