Lately, there’s been a rumor about a potential Red Dead Redemption 2 Next Gen Update. While the speculations are that the rumored update is set to be revealed this week, i.e. 3rd week of June. The latest in this rumor comes straight from the Voice actor of John Marston, Rob Wiethoff, during his live stream, revealing plans for exciting news up ahead. Let’s take a deeper look at this rumor and break down the potential for a Red Dead Redemption 2 next gen update. And re-release on a new the Nintendo Switch 2.

RDR 2 Re-release and potential Nintendo Switch 2 Port
Many credible sources in the gaming industry suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 might finally launch for the Nintendo Switch 2. That being a full native port, including Red Dead Online and Story, fully optimized for the handheld console. The reports come from sources close to Rockstar Games and state that the port might land in late summer 2025. That being just a few weeks away from the time of writing this article.

While Rockstar Games hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, the recent release of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2 makes it hard to believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 wouldn’t be playable on the console. Rumors claiming otherwise are quickly losing ground. It’s only a matter of whether Rockstar Games wants to release their game on the Nintendo Switch 2 or not.
Original Release and Post Launch

Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One on October 26, 2018. Followed by a launch on PC just a few weeks later, on November 5. RDR 2 became one of the best-selling entertainment products in history. Surpassing even films like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame in its sales numbers. RDR 2 managed to sell over 17 million copies in the first 2 weeks, with total lifetime numbers at 74+ million. Only coming second to the previous record holder, GTA 5, as the best-selling entertainment product of all time.
Known for its brilliant story arc and outstanding performance by the voice actors. The second entry became a cult classic with fans and pioneered the art of storytelling in a video game. Widely renowned worldwide for its depth and emotional narrative, even by non-gamers.
Red Dead Redemption 2 never received a story DLC, as Rockstar shifted focus entirely on Red Dead Online. Fan hoped for an Undead Nightmare 2 or a Mexico expansion, but that never came true. With the last major Online update in 2022 and Rockstar prioritizing GTA 6, fans were left wanting more from the single player.
Currently, Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. With the RDR 2 backwards compatible version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Meaning it essentially runs the old gen version of the game, locked at 30FPS and upscaled graphics. Which brings us to..
Will there be a Red Dead Redemption 2 Next Gen Update?
The hottest debate online at the moment is whether there will be a RDR 2 Next Gen update? Recently, on his livestream while playing RD2, the voice actor for John Marston, Rob Weithoff. Had this to say: “I’ve got such exciting news, I can’t share it with you right now and it’s absolutely killing me.”He also stated to expect this surprise news “before Friday” and added
“I cannot wait for you to know what’s going on, and that’s all I can say.”
This statement, paired with the actor playing RDR 2, somewhat fuels fan hope and speculation of a native Red Dead Redemption 2 next-gen update on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. But this very much is debatable, looking at current circumstances, the many factors being:
- Rockstar Games is currently fully focused on the development of GTA 6, leaving little room for other major projects.
- The studio has a track record of abandoning planned updates, as seen with GTA IV and Max Payne 3, and only recently released a current-gen version of the original Red Dead Redemption.
- The recent reveal from voice actor Rob Wiethoff could be a personal or fan-driven project, not an official Rockstar announcement, as voice actors rarely disclose major updates unprompted

That said, speculation continues, and something big might still be in store for Red Dead Redemption 2–though nothing is confirmed by Rockstar Games yet.
Thoughts
Fans should take this tease from the man, the myth, the legend, John Marston, with a pinch of salt. As given release of GTA 6 is just a year away, there is hardly any room for multiple projects at Rockstar Games, that being said. We all know Take-Two Interactive predicted massive profits during their annual investor call, before GTA 6 got delayed. And only with Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country releasing this year, a possible RDR 2 Re-release might just make up the numbers. This theory is purely based on Take-Two’s financial gains and investor call reports.

Fans can only hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 ever makes it on the Nintendo Switch 2 or receives a next gen update. But for now, RDR fans will have to cross their fingers till Friday, as we hear from more Rob or Rockstar Games.
