What is Core Keeper?

Core Keeper is a top-down sandbox title that seamlessly fuses survival, crafting, farming, and exploration. The game was released in early access to Steam on March 8, 2022, within a procedurally generated underground world. It has received positive reviews for its mechanics, art style, and ease of use in its multiplayer modes.

Gameplay Mechanics

Survival and Crafting

You begin your Core Keeper journey in a dark cavern—the Core chamber. You’ll gather wood to craft torches to light your way. As you proceed, you will mine square tiles of dirt and other materials, collecting ores and crafting tools and workbenches. This game has an extreme crafting system by which ores are smelted into weapons and armour, thus making survival somewhat easier the deeper you go into the caverns.

Food and Farming

Survival isn’t just fighting off enemies. You’ll have to care for your hunger bar. Collect food in the wild, sow seeds with a hoe, and water can underground in your farm. As you progress, you can auto-water with sprinklers and even cook meals in a pot. These meals not only stave off hunger but also provide health boosts and perks.

Exploring the Underground World

One of Core Keeper’s key features is, without a doubt, exploration. With the help of a map given in the game, explore the vast network of undergrounds that bring forth new biomes full of varied resources and other enemies. There are Portals to help with long-distance travel, making it easier to either go back to your base or venture further into unknown places. Remember that enemies can spread their area of existence, so cleaning up the field is essential.

Boss Battles and Rewards

Core Keeper isn’t short of challenges. It would help if you stood against bosses like Glurch the Abominous Mass, Ghorm the Devourer, and The Hive Mother. Defeating these bosses will grant you access to new areas, items, and items for your base in the form of NPC merchants you can summon. They are tough fights but rewarding since they give you higher-level tools to continue exploring and moving on.

Multiplayer Fun

One of Core Keeper’s core selling points is its multiplayer aspect. You can play solo or team up with eight players. At any moment, you can host a server and invite your friends into your underground adventure. Now, this is where things start to get really good because cooperative play does indeed add a new layer of excitement while strategizing and exploring together.

Character Customization and Skills

Core Keeper enables one to tailor the game with a skill system that rewards efforts based on what players do frequently. Run often? You’ll get faster. Mine extensively? You’ll be more efficient. During character creation, you may select a starting class that confers bonuses on specific skills and resources. Vanity slots in the inventory also customize the look of your character, standing it out against the dark caverns.

Development and Updates

Pugstorm and Fireshine Games have been committed to keeping Core Keeper new and exciting. Announced during an IGN live stream on June 11, 2021, it’s seen a few updates since going into early access.

Upcoming Platforms

Currently available in early access on PC, Core Keeper will be launching on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 on August 27, 2024, opening the floodgates to a whole new base of players. This will let way more people in on the fun.
