The developers of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds, have confirmed one of the biggest changes coming to the sequel. Confirming that players this time around won’t be able to kill any of the Leviathans in the sequel. If you are unfamiliar with what a Leviathan is, then you’re probably missing out on some of the scariest creatures in a survival game. Lurking deep in the ocean, these alien beings are some of the biggest and toughest enemies the player has to face in the original Subnautica. Let’s take a look at this Gaming News and discover why the devs have decided to change Leviathans in Subnautica 2.

Leviathans in Subnautica Games
One of the biggest features and selling points of Subnautica has been its tense atmosphere in the deeper ends of the Ocean. The Leviathans are some of the biggest and challenging creatures in the game, adding more to its tense alien atmosphere. Players could encounter different leviathan classes in the world of Subnautica, from the common Reaper class to the larger and far more dangerous Ghost and Sea Dragon classes.
Leviathans have always played a key role in the survival feel of the Subnautica Games, with deep stories and lore behind their creations. While not all Leviathans are aggressive predators, one of them assist the player in the later stages of the first game. The last living Sea Emperor, helps the player in their quest in finding the cure for The Carar Bacterium.
Why Can’t You Kill Leviathans in Subnautica 2

As the devs mentioned, in the previous game, the objective wasn’t to kill these unruly giants of the ocean. Subnautica Games have always been about Survival and the ever-lurking fear of the unknown. The main goal is to adapt to this new world and learn all about its alien environments while learning to coexist with its inhabitants. While players could kill the Leviathans in the original Subnautica, there was never any big reward or achievement out of it.
Unknown Games said they want to make the players feel and understand their place in this new ecosystem. Basically saying the Player isn’t the top dog in the new world, as per the design of the game. This big change in Subnautica 2 will make Leviathans even more challenging to deal with and the only way to survive will be avoiding them all together. Players will have to think of new ways to avoid or escape them, especially in the most dangerous areas of the game.

Many fans are not happy with the direction as many of them enjoyed hunting down these behemoths of the ocean and cutting them down for sport. Fans will have to wait and see what the devs are planning with this title, but we know for sure Subnautica 2 is going to be one of the most fun and scary survival games out there on it’s launch.
Subnautica 2 Release Date & Platforms
There is no confirmed release date for Subnautica 2 yet, but we will see the game launch in Early Access soon on the Xbox Series X|S and PC. A PlayStation 5 version is still unconfirmed and the same goes for a possible Nintendo Switch 2 Release. You can read all about Subnautica 2 Early Access here.

Summary
The big changes coming to Leviathans in Subnautica 2 might not sit well with many legacy fans of the game. But it is something the developers are focusing on and are looking to provide a much immersive feel to their game and banging on the “survival” element of this survival game. Subnautica 2 will also feature a four-player co-op multiplayer mode along with crossplay support between PC and Xbox Players.

As someone who beat the first game twice, I’m not bothered by this at all, and also.. YOU COULD KILL THE LEVIATHANS?! My tactic was always run and avoid lol, I absolutely never considered hunting them. You lunatics.
The first game had methods where you could neutralise the leviathans through lengthy but legit methods, though many players avoided those. But it was definitely possible to take them down the Leviathans. While you chose to run and avoid (a totally valid tactic), a lot of others saw it as a challenge and took it up to hunt them down. Which also became a very popular topic in the Subnautica Community as well.
I just replayed through 1 again and have killed 2 ghosts and 2 reaper. I use the stasis rifle to freeze them – then drop a bunch of gas pods in them..then knife them to death. It’s easy (but still terrifying) takes about 5 minutes
I know I won’t be playing this version anytime soon, if at all.. At least now I don’t have to watch for when it comes to PS5. Yes, the first game technically you couldn’t kill them, but you still could. Then the 2nd game they “advanced” it so you could. To me, now they’re regressing so that’s why I won’t be spending any cheddar on it.
I loved the challenge of killing the Leviathans, it also opened up areas to build bases that were close to main areas (lost river) as an example without lengthy rides to and from further locations. I get why they want to do that but also its what made the game more enjoyable towards end game.
I like the change. while I enjoyed killing the leviathans in the first game there really was no reward as mentioned in the article. If they make the leviathans scarier then ever it will make sense I’m really looking forward to it
Dear game dev, this is my wifes favorite game ever. I understand not turning the game into a action, shoot them up game but I think it would be cool to include cool weaponry to not only survive but to conquer and thrive. Please include at least the option to be able to kill them or not, even if it takes a lot of work to do so. Life is hard, and people get their ass’s kicked enough in reality so video games should be fun. My wife is just one person but she more than likely will not play this game based on this change and was willing to even purchase a new Xbox to play it.
What are the chances there will be a co-op or cross play on the switch??
The chances are slim for now, as the game needs to fully release before any ports or cross-play on the Nintendo Switch 2
I do like the plan of making the leviathans unkillable. I’ve played through the origional many times, and it’s biggest appeal is the SURVIVAL aspect for me. You’re not at the top of the food chain aspect makes it much more atmospheric and realistic.
