Avowed Is Not Open-World And Here is Why?

Avowed is creeping closer and the hype train is running full speed. Amidst all the discussions going around this major release, we have the latest update from Kate, the narrative wizard behind Avowed who recently revealed why the game is not going to offer a seamless open-world experience. This upcoming RPG will rather be on the lines of Outer Worlds, having large zones for the players to explore as they navigate through the story. Here’s why Avowed does not vouch for the open world.

Why Isn’t Avowed Open-World?

Kate revealed that Avowed isn’t open world due to Pacing. Tracking players in the open world is a challenge and that’s why the devs diverged from their approach of setting the game in an open world. This clearly means that the game is all set to come with stronger narrative beats and richer character development where players will get to dig through large, explorable “Zones”. This design choice fits well into their wheelhouse of crafting RPGs that focus on lore along with memorable characters. This also means the game won’t bloat with content, keeping players’ focus intact.

Avowed features first-person combat with an option to switch the perspective to third-person. A shift from a seamless open world will mean fewer areas for the players to explore, but better, refined gameplay mechanics. As players hop onto the game, they will take on the role of Envoy of Aedyr who is sent to investigate the Living Lands where the Plague has swept in. This dense theme of Avowed merged with a non-open-world design choice will definitely make the gameplay experience more immersive.

What’s Buzzing?

The gameplay is all set to come with spell-slinging action and a highly immersive storyline, featuring melee combat. As it got official that Avowed isn’t open-world, new gameplay on Twitter caught the eyes of the players. This new gameplay featured better combat mechanics and a striking art direction.

As Obsidian released the official gameplay last year, most gamers found it “flat”, but now, it is no longer the case. The new gameplay footage revealed a great, visually immersive, fast-paced battle that brings spell-casting, environmental interaction, and swordplay, all in one. This improved immersive gameplay looks like an outcome of the devs’ decision to not make Avowed Open-World, promising an engaging experience.

Summary

Avowed is all set to hit the consoles on February 18, 2025, and the buzz around it is at an all-time high. Devs’ choice to not place the game in an open world and make it more linear is grabbing the attention of players from all around. The game is ready to roll out soon. And, it will release on Xbox Series X|S and PC and is available for pre-order here.
